After the success ofFNAF Into the Pit,AnotherFazbear Frightstory deserves the spin-off treatment.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pittells the story of a 10-year-old boy, Oswald, whose innocent prank opens the door to a supernatural nightmare. Written as both an original story and an accessible introduction toFNAFfor readers, the story sees Oswald explore the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza in 1985, before Spring Bonnie follows him home back to the present. Animatronics following characters home from Freddy’s is a recurring trend in theFazbear Frightsseries, with various stories adapting characters, objects, and locations from the games. One such story, which adaptedFNAF 4’s Plushtrap, offers a compelling case for game adaptation, as its core gameplay mechanics could build on those ofInto the Pit, albeit with a twist.
FNAF’s Out of Stock Story Deserves a Game Adaptation
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Fazbear Frights’ second volume,Fetch, featured three new stories set withinFNAF’suniverse. While its title story is rumored to be the next adapted to gaming, its third entry,Out of Stock, has all the makings of a great survival horror title. The title features a small animatronic, the Plushtrap Chaser, at its center, which adapts the titular animatronic fromFNAF 4’s Fun with Plushtrap minigame. Like its gaming counterpart, the Plushtrap Chaser can only move in complete darkness, freezing in place when confronted with a light source. While the original mini-game sees players attempt to stop the animatronic in a designated spot,Out of Stocksees the concept expanded into a night-long nightmare for three young friends.
Out of Stockfollows a boy named Oscar who desperately wants a Plushtrap Chaser of his own. When Oscar and his friends, Raj and Isaac, reach the front of the line at the Emporium, where Plushtrap is on sale, they learn it is sold out, before Oscar overhears chatter about a strange, lifelike defect. After asking to purchase the defect, and being refused, Oscar steals thestrange animatronic, which appears to have human eyes and real teeth.
Days later, the boys are at Oscar’s when a storm strikes the area. As Oscar plugs the Plushtrap Chaser in to charge, lightning strikes the house, knocking out the power and plunging the boys into darkness. With only a few semi-functional flashlights at their disposal, the boys find themselves hunted by Plushtrap, who rapidly maneuvers the house, chews through doors, andmimics their voices. To survive the night, the boys must work together to escape the darkness and destroy the Chaser, or the lights may go out for good.
