Summary
Rumors are swirling around the internet suggesting that Marvel Studios is working on aWiccanTV showforDisney Plus, and this series could end up being pivotal in bringing Scarlet Witch—aka Wanda Maximoff—back into theMarvel Cinematic Universe(MCU) in her own movie. AWiccanseries could also be essential in bringing the Young Avengers to the MCU, which is something that fans have been longing to see for a while now.
There’s a spoiler warning up above, but in case that was missed, here’s another one for those who aren’t up to date onAgatha All Along. The series revealed that the young man accompanying Agatha and the rest of the Coven on their journey along the Witches' Road was actually Wanda Maximoff’s son, Wiccan. This was something that a number of fans had guessed when it was revealed that Joe Locke (ofHeartstopperfame) would be playing a character in the series. The rumor that he was playing Wiccan only intensified once the show’s first trailer was released.
However, it wasn’t untilAgatha All Along’sfifth episode that Locke’s character’s true identity was revealed, and the reveal didn’t disappoint. There have since been rumors that Joe Locke will return as the character in his own series, which could help set up his mother’s return. Yes, it certainly sounds like Wanda Maximoff—theScarlet Witch herself—is about to return to the MCU, something fans of the character and Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal have eagerly awaited ever since her last MCU appearance inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
What Are the Rumors Saying About a Wiccan TV Series?
During an interview withEntertainment Weekly, Locke spoke of his excitement for fans to see Wiccan brought to life on screen. “I’m in the U.K. The episode drops at 2:00 a.m.,” he revealed. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep, so I’m just going to drug myself and then wake up to my phone blowing up, which it did.” Locke also shared that he was incredibly nervous, explaining, “The thing that I’ve kept so secret, guarding it with my life, is now just in the ether.”
It was a huge moment for Marvel fans, as ever since Billy—aka Wiccan—was first introduced in the MCU inWandaVision, those familiar with the comics couldn’t wait to see how he’d be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s a significant character in the comics and ends up becoming one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Comics universe, which is certainly saying something. His return also paves the way for Wanda’s return, something fans have been clamoring for ever since her “death” inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
“The thing that I’ve kept so secret, guarding it with my life, is now just in the ether.”
As for theWiccanTV show, reports suggest that a series is in the works at Marvel Studios, with Joe Locke in the lead. This rumor came from industry insider Daniel Richtman, and it was reported back in August 2023. The recent confirmation that Joe Locke is indeed playing Wiccan inAgatha All Alongsolidifies this “scoop” as likely genuine. Richtman also mentioned that thisWiccanseries would be the thirdWandaVisionspinoff afterAgatha All AlongandVision Quest, which is currently in development.
What Could a Wiccan TV Show Mean for Scarlet Witch?
Marvel fans have been asking themselves ifElizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witchis alive at the end ofDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It’s actually a question Olsen herself doesn’t seem able to answer. She’s been asked about her return on numerous occasions, and she’s been open about not knowing what Marvel’s plans for her character are.
However, recent developments in the MCU suggest that Wanda Maximoff could be about to return. Industry insiders like Daniel Richtman have claimed that a Scarlet Witch movie is in the works at Marvel Studios and thatElizabeth Olsen will reprise her iconic role. Now, with the reveal inAgatha All Alongthat Joe Locke was, in fact, playing Wiccan “all along,” it seems Marvel Studios has a significant return planned for Scarlet Witch.
How Could Wiccan Bring Scarlet Witch Back From the Dead?
But how could Wiccan help bring his mother back from the dead, and would he even want to? Let’s answer the easier part of that question first. Yes, Wiccan (otherwise known as Billy) would want to bring his mother back. That’s one of his character’s main motivations. But how he would do it is a bit more complex. Somerumors suggest that Wanda’s chaos magicmay have saved her at the end ofDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, leaving her alive somewhere in the Multiverse or in a realm outside it.
In Marvel comics, Wanda was left powerless in one storyline, stripped of her memories and left in the ruins of Mount Wundagore. This could potentially allowScarlet Witch to return to the MCU, with Wiccan playing a key role. His magic is extremely strong, much like his mother’s, and he’s proven to be both dedicated and persistent. He also has a bit of a cunning streak, something he used to his advantage inAgatha All Alongand could leverage to bring his mother back.
Another possibility is that Wiccan could locate one of the many Wandas in the Multiverse. We already know, thanks toDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, that there are multiple powerful Wandas out there who may not be as grief-stricken as the MCU’s version. Perhaps Wiccan could bring one of these variants into the MCU and reunite with his mother that way. From a storytelling perspective, however, many fans would prefer the original Wanda’s return over relying on a Multiverse workaround.
How Could a Wiccan TV Series Set Up the Young Avengers?
Now, let’s discuss how aWiccanTV series could help set up aYoung Avengersmovie, which Marvel Studios is reportedly developing. This is exciting news, as the Young Avengers are an essential part of the comics, and fans have long awaited their MCU debut. In the MCU, the Young Avengers team would likely include Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan (often the team’s leader in the comics), Kate Bishop (played by Hailee Steinfeld), Cassie Lang (played by Kathryn Newton), Skaar (played by Wil Deusner), America Chavez (played by Xochitl Gomez), and Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne).
Another addition would be Joe Locke’s Billy—aka Wiccan—who could arguably be the most powerful member. Kamala Khan might have something to say about that, but Wiccan’s powers in the comics are virtually limitless, and he’s already demonstrated his abilities inAgatha All Along. ThisWiccanseries might be the stepping stone forbringing the Young Avengers together, which would be a thrilling development for Marvel fans who’ve been waiting for it for a long time.
