Summary
Snail Games has announcedFor The Stars, a new AAA title about space exploration. While far from the first game to task players with colonizing space,For The Starspromises a different type of gameplay compared to something likeStarfieldorNo Man’s Sky.
A division of Suzhou Snail Digital Technology, Snail Games is best known as the publisher of theARKfranchise, as well as the developer of theARK: ParkVR spin-off. The company was most recently involved in theARK: Survival Ascendedremaster, which it published in 2023.
For The Stars Targets Sandbox Survival Gameplay on a Galactic Scale
The studio’s latest project has just been announced in the form ofFor The Stars, a sandbox space exploration game that will put players in the shoes of fearless scientists looking to tame the final frontier. “Our goal is to create a game that’s played like a sandbox survival game but has the impact of a 4x galaxy civilization game,” saidFor The Starsdirector Primus Majda. To that end,For The Starspromises an open and persistent multiplayer universe full of possibilities, ranging from base building and colony management to interplanetary travel and forging alliances. Players will also have a chance to uncover the secrets of lostalien civilizations, as well as some that are alive, well, and hostile.
Base Building Will Be an Integral Part of For The Stars Gameplay Loop
Every planet in the game is said to feature distinct flora and fauna, as well as its own challenges and rewards. Establishing, expanding, and managing outposts is described as a big part of theFor The Starsgameplay loop and something that players will be doing on pretty much every planet. Given Snail Games' portfolio, it’s possible this system might be somewhat mechanically similar toARK: Survival Ascended’s base building. While the developer has yet to share details about how outpost building will work in practice, it did cryptically state that players' colonies will have to “withstand trials of space.”
As far as interplanetary travel is concerned,For The Starswill allow players to procure multiple spaceships, all of which can be customized for combat, exploration, resource extraction, ar a combination thereof. Dynamic combat using guns and special abilities will also be part of the package, with Snail Games confirming thatFor The Starswill have both PvE and PvP elements. Among other things, players will be able to fight for the control of the galaxy by fighting in its contested regions, as well as team up on building projects and share discoveries with one another.
Our goal is to create a game that’s played like a sandbox survival game but has the impact of a 4x galaxy civilization game.
The game itself is in development for PC and thecurrent-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles. While it’s been been in the works since 2021, Snail Games is not yet ready to commit to a firm release window. The company also hasn’t outright labeledFor The Starsas a live-service project, but the game does appear to be tapping into its live-service expertise.
