Summary

Avowedis the next big AAA role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment, the developers of acclaimed titles likeFallout: New Vegas,Knights of the Old Republic 2, andThe Outer Worlds. Set in the same universe as the studio’sPillars of Eternityseries, this upcoming fantasy action RPG places players in the shoes of an envoy who’s tasked with finding the cause behind a mysterious disease that’s plagued a lush region known as the Living Lands.Avowedis primarily designed with a first-person perspective in mind, but just like Bethesda RPGs, the game can also be played in third-person.

Though it was initially slated for a fall 2024 release,Avowedwas unfortunately delayed by a few monthsand is now currently set to drop on June 26, 2025. Since Obsidian Entertainment is a Microsoft-owned studio, it should come as no surprise that, when the game comes out next year, it’ll launch exclusively on Xbox Series X/S and PC. There hasn’t been any word from the developer, however, on whether its RPG will land on other platforms following its February release. While it’s still up in the air if such a thing will even happen,Avowedcould take a page fromThe Outer Worldsin this regard and make its way to Nintendo platforms after its initial launch on Xbox consoles.

Avowed Could Make a Big Splash on the Nintendo Switch 2

The Outer Worlds Came To Nintendo Switch After Its Initial Multiplatform Launch

Obsidian’ssatirical sci-fi RPGThe Outer Worldswas the last title the developer released that Microsoft wasn’t the publisher of. Even though the studio had been acquired by Xbox by the time the game was announced at The Game Awards 2018, it was published by Take-Two subsidiary Private Division due to pre-existing contract agreements. As such, when the game came out in October 2019, it was a multiplatform title on day one and launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. Surprisingly, though, less than a year later, Private Division releasedThe Outer Worldson Nintendo Switch, with the help of Singaporean support studio Virtuos.

Given that it was fairly modern for the time in terms of scope and graphical fidelity,The Outer Worldsbeing ported to Nintendo’s underpowered handheld wasn’t something that most people expected. Still, the developers at Virtuos managed to pull it off, albeit with somemajor compromises inThe Outer Worlds' tech and graphics departments. Playing the Switch version ofThe Outer Worldswas, by far, the worst way to experience the acclaimed RPG, but it was still solid enough to get the job done.

Avowed Could Be a Better Fit for the Switch 2 than The Outer Worlds Was For the Switch

IfAvoweddoes followThe Outer Worlds' footsteps by coming to a Nintendo platform after its initial launch, it could stick the landing far better than Obsidian’s space RPG did by releasing on Nintendo Switch 2 rather than the original Switch. The chances ofAvowedbeing able to run natively on the latter of the two consoles is probably next to zero due to it being too demanding for the device. However, sinceNintendo’s next-gen platformwill presumably be far more powerful than the company’s current handheld, it will likely be able to handle a game as graphically-intensive asAvowed. Of course, while it probably wouldn’t run as well as on Xbox or PC, a Switch 2 port of the game could potentially provide the ideal way to play Obsidian’s fantasy RPG on the go.

A year or two ago, a hypothetical Switch or Switch 2 port of an Xbox-exclusive first-party game likeAvowedwas out of the question. But, followingMicrosoft’s recent decision to bring four of its first-party titles to PlayStation and Nintendo consolesearlier this year, anything is possible at this point.PentimentandGrounded, two Xbox-published Obsidian games, already landed on Switch not too long ago, so perhapsAvowedcould be the next game from the developer to make its way to a Nintendo platform at some point in time.
