Battlefield 6has no chance of beatingCall of Duty: Black Ops 7if one specific leaked detail turns out to be true. The long-standing rivalry between the two franchises is set to be reignited later this year, butBattlefield 6may have already put itself at a distinct disadvantage.

DespiteCall of DutyandBattlefieldbeing two very different types of shooters, fans have often pitted them and their success against one another. WhereCall of Dutywas all about the gunplay,Battlefield’s large-scale blend of boots-on-the-ground and vehicular combat offered a more realistic combat experience. However, thestruggles of previous releaseBattlefield 2042and the lack of a new title in almost four years mean thatCall of Dutyhas undeniably been the more relevant franchise of late, leavingBattlefieldto fight an uphill battle from the start.

But if recent leaks are true thatBattlefield 6is skipping Xbox One and PlayStation 4, then its upcoming battle againstCall of Duty: Black Ops 7may already be lost. While most developers have already left the last-gen consoles behind,Call of Dutyis one of the few series that has continued to release for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, a necessary choice due to its mass appeal. That doesn’t meanBattlefield 6can’t be a massive success in its own right, but any hopes it has of competing against the sales numbers of another cross-generationCall of Dutygame appear to be dead in the water.

Battlefield 6 Skipping Last-Gen Undoubtedly Limits Game Sales

Ultimately, it makes sense thatBattlefield 6is skipping last-gen hardware. TheBattlefieldseries has often pushed the boundaries when it comes to graphical fidelity, and being hamstrung by 2013 hardware would massively hold it back in that regard. However, there’s no doubt that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 still have a huge player base, and EA is leaving a lot of money on the table by abandoning those consoles. It certainly makesEA’s ambitious plan to hit 100 million players inBattlefield 6seem all the more unlikely.

EA has yet to confirm aBattlefield 6release date, although the most significant rumor currently has the game pegged for an October 10 launch. This is to be taken with a pinch of salt, of course. Fans should keep an eye out for July 31, whenEA is hostingBattlefield 6’s multiplayer reveal. Perhaps this is when EA will also reveal the open beta dates forBattlefield 6, the existence of which was confirmed just a few days ago.
