True to many roguelikes,Windblownoffers players many ways to improve their characters. In the Early Access release, players can upgrade their character with permanent unlocks like more potion charges or the ability to sell loot on a run. During a run, players can also get temporary upgrades that come in two forms: Boosts and Gifts.
Boosts are typically stat-based while Gifts usually offer something more wondrous. There are a lot of temporary upgrades to find in theEarly Access versionofWindblownso far and it can be hard to tell which will be most beneficial. Here’s a helpful set of suggestions for those struggling.
8Abundance
Find More Cogs
Abundance is one of the most important Gifts players can find on a run. Cogs are themain upgrade currencyofWindblown. A typical version of this can grant players a 20% increase in the Cogs they find from chests to slain monsters. The more Cogs players have, the more things they can unlock permanently at home base from the aforementioned increase in potion charges to an upgrade that will give players a new weapon on every run. For players who want to grind through the beginning sections of the game quickly, it’s recommended to focus on Cog collecting.
7Boss Killer
Take Down Mini-Bosses And Bosses Faster
Players can probably get through most enemies without a problem as long as they are flexible and can use the dodge ability well. However, they may have trouble with bosses as most roguelike bosses can destroy players in a matter of seconds if they are unprepared. That’s where the Boss Killer Gift comes in handy as it can deal more damage to bothbig bosses and mini-bosses. A starting example would help add 40% damage to attacks which is a great upgrade. Players may also want to consider the Boost abilities, Damage, which increases attack power for all moves, or Criticals which will increase critical attack power.
6Deadly Scythe
Spawn Scythes For Kills
The Deadly Scythe will create a spinning blade that will surround players for a small frame of time. One will spawn based on the number of kills players have and it’s as simple as that. While it’s great to get a Gift that can boost attack power fully or aid against a particular foe like a boss, getting a Gift like Death Scythe is just as valuable.
Players need to supplement their attack power with something like this or a status effect like Burn especially if they aren’t going to usethe co-op option. The more gadgets players have, the faster enemies will fall.
5Health
Increase HP
Any good roguelike player knows thatincreasing their healthis a great upgrade to get permanent or otherwise. Health is the literal name for the Boost in Windblown and starting examples can raise the player’s HP by 25. Besides increasing HP, players can restore it via the Necromancy Gift or with potions. A starting example of this can restore 4% of the player’s health upon defeating an enemy. Which temporary upgrade is better? That’s up to players to decide but without a doubt, if they are lucky enough to find both, they should take them no matter what.
4Midas
5% Attack Bonus For Every 100 Shells
Midas is a Gift that will use Shells, one of the game’s currencies, differently. For every 100 Shells that players collect, a boost will be granted to the player’s overall attack power. It’s an incentive not to use Shells in the game and instead hoard them like some sort of roguelike chipmunk.Windblowndoes feature a lot of animal avatarsalready, so maybe a chipmunk could be added in a future update. Jokes aside, getting Midas and hoarding Shells is one way to get extremely powerful in a run. There is another Shell-based Gift players may want to look into, Golden Health, which does the same percentage boost except with HP instead of attack power.
3Refillable Flask
Refill Health Flasks Upon Attacks
The Healing Flask is the most valuable item in the game. At any moment, players can heal their HP while on a run. They will begin with one healing charge but they can upgrade it at HQ to get up to four charges.
The Refillable Flask is a Gift that will technically give players a fifth flask. It’s an empty Healing Flask that will refill based on the amount of damage done. So, if players are skilled enough, they can keep reusing this Gift to heal which is great for any roguelike.
2Survivor
Revive Back to 50% Health
Survivor is an amazing Gift that will revive players upon dying. There is a catch though as this will eat up a slot even in resurrection. For example, if players have three Gift slots and Survivor occupies one of them, Survivor cannot be replaced even after it is used once. Players have to use it strategically and think if it is worth keeping around. As it is a health-based power-up, the answer will usually be yes. Again, this all depends on whether players are going into a run solo or with a group of friends in co-op as Survivor is less necessary in that scenario.
1Trinket Refill
Reduce Trinket Cooldowns
Trinkets are like sub-weapons in Windblown and they run on cooldowns like in anRPG with ability systems akin toDiablo. Trinket Refill is a Boost that will speed up the cooldown process by 6%. Alternatively, players can find the Deadly Refill Gift, which will reduce the cooldowns of Trinkets every time players make a kill. For example, they could reduce the cooldown by five seconds. Both of these Trinket-boosting upgrades will help a lot as they will typically cause a lot of damage to large groups of enemies like the Blade Storm Trinket.
