Summary
Season of Discoveryis a version ofWoW Classicthat returns to the setting and features of the old game but also includes many new or improved components that players have discovered as theyprogress to level 60. Along with the new rare materials that crafters will be farming in the open world or fighting over in dungeons and raids, many famous materials from 2004’s Classic are still here.
Some materials are used with specific professions and their related patterns, schematics, and recipes, while others are used as reagents in Enchaments or spells. Once in a while, these materials will appear in the Auction House, but a few are soulbound and can only be used by the character that picks them up.
1Demonic Runes
Farmed By Mana Users And Tailors
Demonic Runes were also present in the old game and their function and location haven’t changed. They’re still rare, essential for certain recipes, and can also be used to restore mana at the cost of health. They drop from demons that are level 40 and up, so it’s not unusual to see level 60 characters in northern Azshara or the southern Blasted Lands farming them.
Any mana user can stockpile Demonic Runes to use them to instantly restore 900 to 1500 mana at the cost of 600 to 1000 life, although this isless useful for Warlockswho already have the Life Tap ability. Tailors and Blacksmiths require Demonic Runes for a variety of patterns, and these items are soulbound, so they can’t be purchased on the Auction House.
2Elemental Earth
A High-Level Crafting Regeant
One of the easiest high-level reagents to find, Elemental Earth starts dropping from mobs in the open world and dungeons as early as the 40s. Maraudon is one nature-based dungeon with plenty of potential for drops, and the giants that wander through Azshara and Searing Gorge also drop this item. Miners have an advantage because it’s often found while harvesting ore, and it can also be found on the Auction House for a reasonable cost.
Don’t let the relative ease of finding this reagent Iull oneself into a false sense of security. It’s especially important for Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths when grinding levels and making BiS pieces, so it’s a good idea to stockpile it for large-scale use later.
3Living Essence
For Enchantments And A Variety Of Crafted Gear
Several endgame recipes include this high-level reagent, which was also important in the vintage game. These include enchantments likeEnchant Weapon - Lifestealingalong with being a reagent for a wide variety of recipes. These drop with varying degrees of frequency in the open world, and players will start finding them in the mid-40s.
These are a drop from elite creatures in natural settings, so players should look in places like Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, and the Western Plaguelands. One of the most efficient ways to farm Living Essence is by running certain dungeons at this level, with Dire Maul in Feralas being one of the most popular locations.
4Nightmare Seeds
A Drop In Sunken Temple
Nightmare Seeds are an item exclusive toSeason of Discovery, and the only place to find them is in the Sunken Temple in the Swamp of Sorrows. Also known as the Temple of Atal’Hakkar, or simply as ST in the LFG channel, this classic 5-player dungeon is now a raid that accommodates a team of 20. There are plenty of quest chains and lore that lead through the Sunken Temple, and inSoDthere are different currencies that drop in the dungeon along with new crafting ingredients.
Players can use Nightmare Seeds to make high-level pieces of epic-quality gear, and the raid leader will often collect the lot and distribute themonce the final boss has fallen. Another advantage this item has is that it isn’t soulbound, so if players don’t need them immediately, it’s possible to turn them into gold at the Auction House.
5Felcloth
Valuable, Rare, And Essential For Crafting
Almost every high-level Tailoring recipe, including those for Mooncloth, requires Felcloth. It’s not exactly a rare drop, butit’s used so extensivelyand drops so infrequently that there are all kinds of discussions online as to where the best place is to get it. It’s also rare enough to be valuable, and it’s common for players to farm Felcloth just to sell it.
Kalimdor is a better place to find Felcloth, by killing demons and satyrs in central Felwood, near the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands, or in Darkwhisper Gorge in Winterspring. Some high-level recipes require stacks of 10 or 20, along with a generous number of Demonic Runes, but luckily the latter also drops in many of the same places.
6Savory Deviate Delight
Don’t Run A Raid Without It
The Deviate Fish is easy to find, and it has several random uses that are fun even at early levels. For some next-level fun at max level, buy a recipe for Savory Deviate Delight from the Auction House, or search for a random drop fairly regularly in the same area, and grab a few Deviate Fish from the schools that appear in the three small oases in the Barrens.
One of these fishing spots is directly in front of the entrance to Wailing Caverns, the other two are northwest and southeast of the Crossroads. The trick is that it’s only in one relatively small space, and Alliance players might have a tougher time traveling through Horde lands to get there. It only requires a level 85 in Cooking to make, but the mats are elusive and it’s much easier to get them at level 60.
