Summary
TheBorderlandsseries is known for its snappy dialogue between characters. From enemies yelling attacks from behind or upfront, to allies squawking about lore through radio chatter, there is a lot to ingest.
The frantic pace of the dialogue is downplayed in theBorderlandsmovie but that doesn’t mean there are no good lines. From classic characters like Lilith to more obscure ones that will not be spoiled yet, again, there are some funny lines throughout this fast-paced action comedy.
6“Who Does?”
Lilith
One of the most memorable moments in the film happens in the barLilith is introducedin. She’s just brought in a bounty and is happily drinking when some associates of the Atlas Corporation come over. They have a message from their leader, Deukalian Atlas, who Lilith could not be more ready to ignore.
They warn her that Deukalian Atlas is a man who does not like to be kept waiting. That’s when Lilith replied with this line followed by a quick draw that wouldmake any gunslingerof the Old West blush. This version of Lilith is not one to be trifled with and no amount of banter will convince her otherwise. That is, until a hologram of Deukalian Atlas appears and gives her a substantial amount of money which does get Lilith to cooperate.
5“Bus Is For Vault Hunters.”
Marcus
Marcus is a classic CHARACTER in every sense of the word in the games. He operated as the narrator in the firstBorderlandsand had many other appearances following that. While his part is small in the movie, it is iconic.
Marcus picks Lilith up once she reaches Pandora, thinking she is a Vault Hunter. No matter how many times Lilith says this, Marcus directs her to an infomercial madefor Vault Hunterswishing to get prepped by Marcus’ company. He is unwilling to listen to make a buck which fits with the money-grubbing corporate theme of the movie. Marcus is just another shopkeeper trying to make it in this wild galaxy.
4“You Accidentally Shot Me In The Face Again.”
Claptrap
Claptrap might be the best representationof a character from the games. Jack Black does a good job of being a sarcastic robot that has no idea how to deal with human emotions. He finds Lilith on Pandora, swearing to her that he was programmed to find her one day.
Lilith could not care less and tried to shoot Claptrap multiple times. He is unfazed by this rejection, thinking Lilith shot him by accident with this great line. Another great scene happens after this when she cages Claptrap after stealing a vehicle and he still doesn’t get that Lilith is being mean on purpose. As annoying as Claptrap units can be in the games, and even the movie, they are the mascot of the franchise and it would not be the same without them.
3“Electric Shower!”
Tiny Tina And Krieg
It’s established in the opening crawl that this is not a cool future to live in. People are seemingly owned by corporations and if they don’t belong to one likeAtlas or Hyperion, then they are probably desolate wastelanders trying to make a cheap buck by bounty hunting, raiding, or Vault Hunting.
That’s why it’s the little things in the future that can be fun like getting to a place with an electric shower. It amazes Tiny Tinaand Krieg at least who exclaim, “Electric Shower!” simultaneously while jumping in together. Instead of water, electricity cleans people in the future or at least that’s the type of shower that Dr. Tannis has. She even has a hand-based version of an electric shower later in theBorderlandsmovie that seemingly works just as well.
2“I’m Celebrating Because You’re Alive.”
Claptrap has another great line later in the Borderlands movie when everyone thinks Lilith is a traitor. Tiny Tina tries to blow her up but she survives the blast. When Lilith returns to the group, Claptrap is dancing in celebration of her supposed death. Upon seeing she is okay, Claptrap sings a different tune as if he is happy to see Lilith.
By the last act of the movie, Claptrap finally gets Lilith is not a nice person and is actively wishing for her death with little jokes. However, in this pivotal scene, Lilith tries to make things right with everyone. She never really apologizes to Claptrap but no one seems to ever take one of these robots seriously.
1“Glorious Meat Fiesta!”
Krieg
Krieg is a bit different in the movie than he is in the games. First introduced asa DLC playable characterinBorderlands 2, Krieg had a diverse background. He spoke in nonsensical lines for the most part but he had a cunning inner voice that was more educated. This dichotomy made the character fun to play in between all of his rants about meat.
There is a callback to his love of meat in the Borderlands movie, with his final line being, “Glorious Meat Festival.” This is in response to Roland asking Krieg if he wants to join him in the festivities below. Whether or not there is meat at the celebration ceremony is unimportant. That’s just the way Krieg talks and fans wouldn’t want it any other way.
