Gamescom Opening Night Live kicked off with a bang by revealingBorderlands 4, the next entry in Gearbox Software’s beloved looter-shooter franchise. Considering the dizzying commercial success of the previousBorderlandsgames,Borderlands 4has always been a matter of “when” and not “if.” But with seven years between the launch ofBorderlands 2and3, franchise fans were never quite sure exactly when they’d be able to expect the game.
Recently,Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford teasedthat a newBorderlandsgame announcement would be coming sooner rather than later. Still, no one expected the game to be announced at Gamescom, with its unveiling serving as the event’s first big surprise.
Gearbox Software and 2K Games revealedBorderlands 4with a CG trailer that showed a burning phoenix in the sky and what appears to be longtime series setting Pandora crashing through some kind of field, sending apsycho bandit maskhurdling to the surface of an unknown planet. A robotic arm reaches out and grabs the mask, soon replaced by theBorderlands 4logo and the game’s confirmed platforms. As revealed by theBorderlands 4reveal trailer, the new game will be launching in 2025 for PC (through both Steam and the Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X, marking the first true next-gen installment in the fan-favorite series.
