Summary
Keanu Reeves’Constantine 2gets a massive and encouraging update from writer Akiva Goldsman, making fans excited about the character’s return to the big screen.
The firstConstantinefilm was released in 2005 and saw Reeves playing the role ofDC’s Hellblazer. Although the film received mixed reviews, fans loved how the actor portrayed such a complex character. Since then, fans have been requesting DC and Warner Bros. to work on anotherConstantinemovie. In recent years, there have been several talks about a second movie, but, in 2022, WB announced a sequel and noted that Reeves would return for the sequel. Now, the writer of the upcoming film has opened up about the project and come forward with a promising update on the script of the sequel.
Speaking in aninterview with Collider, Goldsman opened up about writing the sequel and noted that he is writing the script for Constantine 2. Moreover, he revealed that they initially tried to bring the character back for a TV series, but they couldn’t move ahead because of rights issues. Goldsman said, “It’s going fine. I’m writing a script aboutConstantine 2. It’s good. I hope to have a script for my partners soon. There was always this desire, if not lurching, to try to redo it. We tried it for TV, and we could never quite get the rights back; the rights were sort of going around. There was a sort of ground swell—there was a TV series somewhere in there.”
Goldsman’s comments come a few weeks after Reeves revealed how one of his previous interviews led the producers to work on a sequel. In 2021, the actor, while appearing onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, noted that he would love to play Constantine again. Almost three years later, the John Wick actor appeared on The Late Show again and said that the studio started having conversations about the sequel right after the 2021 interview. Goldsman intends to complete the script really soon so that the project can move to the next phase, but it might take a long time before the character makes an appearance on the screen. According to the newly launched DC Universe, Constantine seems to be a part of the Elseworlds universe, meaningConstantine 2might be considered an Elseworlds project. For the uninitiated, Elseworlds is a DC franchise to differentiate between stories that are part of the new DC Universe and those that exist outside its canon.
As of now, there is no confirmation on when the script will be finished and if James Gunn will finalize the story so that it can be presented on the big screen. However,it is certainly exciting to see Reeves playing Constantine again. Reeves brought a brooding intensity and a cynical edge toConstantine, which resonated well with audiences who enjoyed the film as a standalone piece. Over time, his performance has garnered a cult following in recent times, making fans eager to see him play the role once again.
