It took seven years of waiting, but THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games have finally confirmed thatDarksiders 4is on its way. As part of the August 2025 THQ Nordic Digital Showcase, a teaser for the next, and possibly last, installment in the fifteen-year-old action/adventure franchise was shown, and fans are already getting excited. For a while, it was uncertain if the franchise would ever secure funding for another major installment, but with the original trilogy and a spin-off all on modern consoles now, the time forDarksiders 4to make its move is clearly right.

The four Horsemen of the Apocalypse — War, Death, Fury, and Strife — will finally stand united inDarksiders 4, which is a move that is not only fitting for this installment but also a massive step forward for the series.Darksiders’ world-hopping plotcould also be taking a huge step forward, as the prior entries had been doing a concerning amount of wheel-spinning in that department until all four riders could properly be introduced. Further details are scarce, but this confirmed team-up and its implications are enough to makeDarksiders 4look worth the wait, just as long as the reach of its core premise doesn’t exceed its grasp.

Darksiders 4 Will Let Players Control Any Of The Four Horsemen

Until more is revealed,Darksiders 4’s three big selling points are its cinematic combat, expansive realms, and four playable Horsemen. The first two are old hat for the series, but the third is a massive shake-up that could make or break this whole installment. After its time makingRemnant: From the AshesandRemnant 2, there’s little doubt that Gunfire Games can handlerealizing all four Horsemen of the Apocalypsein one game, but giving them all an equal spotlight in the gameplay as well as the narrative has a fair number of pros and cons.

Why Four Playable Horsemen Are Great For Darksiders 4

Letting players choose which rider they want to play as is inherently interesting, and feels earned after this series spent so long introducing the four of them. They can show off their dynamics as a team in and out of battle, and that goes double if multiplayer gets involved.Remnant 2is one of the best co-op Soulslikes, and Gunfire Games has every reason to bring that expertise to bear inDarksiders 4. Even if this is just a single-player game, having four drastically different ways to play could giveDarksiders 4a lot of replayability, but there’s also a worry that this choice could rob something from the game as well.

Letting Players Choose Their Darksiders 4 Protagonist Will Have Consequences

While it’s, again, too early to presumeDarksiders 4’s format, it sounds like players will be choosing which of the four Horsemen they want to control, with any rotation between the group likely just being forced into a prologue section, if at all. It will feel freeing for players, but developers will have to deal with fairly severe restrictions to make it work. Even if it comes off as messy, more gameplay variety would be possible ifall fourDarksidersHorsemenhad their own sections in a single story campaign, and that’s just a broad stroke.

A campaign that needs to accommodate just one of four distinct characters, especially in what sounds like a large world, will have to sacrifice complexity to do it. Puzzles, traversal, and even combat will have to be filed down into a shape that any Horseman can fit into, and that could robDarksiders 4of the impact it’s spent years building up. Gunfire Games’Remnant 2co-op design could be the solution, but there’s no telling if that will happen.Darksiders 4is gambling everything on its main conceit, and hopefully the results are worth the trouble.
