This article has SPOILERS for Dead Rising
The upcomingDead Rising Deluxe Remasteris changing Cliff’s story so that he is no longer a Vietnam War veteran. Capcom tookDead Risingfans by surprise when it announced a big new remaster of the 2006 original with revamped control options, new quality-of-life features, and greatly improved graphics. The game seems to be going above and beyond what fans expect from a remaster, though this also includes some controversial changes.
TheDead Rising Deluxe Remasteris making changes to some of the original game’s content, particularly when it comes to things that some may find offensive. The big one is thatDead Rising Deluxe Remasteris doing away with Erotic photos, which encouraged players to take suggestive photos of women for extra points. Psychopath Larry Chiang’s design has also been toned down, as some felt the original design was racist.
AnotherDead RisingPsychopath is getting a change in theDeluxe Remaster, with many fans not happy about it. It’s been revealed thatDead Rising Deluxe Remasteris changing Cliff’s dialogue so that he no longer references the Vietnam War or communism. In the original game, Cliff accusesprotagonist Frank Westof being a member of the Viet Cong and calls him a “communist.” The new version has changed the dialogue so that Cliff instead accuses Frank of being a “mole” and calls him a “filthy animal.” Fans have criticized Capcom for the change, as Cliff’s PTSD from the Vietnam War was one of his defining characteristics.
After Frank defeats Cliff in the original game, he explains that his granddaughter beingkilled by zombies in Willamette Malltriggered his PTSD, causing him to think that he was back in the war. Unless there have been some other dialogue changes, Cliff’s war will now be a generic one instead of Vietnam. Understandably, some fans think that this lessens the emotional impact of Cliff’s story and makes him a less interesting character than he was in the originalDead Risinggame. The good news is that the originalDead Risingis still readily available to play on modern consoles, and Capcom has given no indication that it plans on delisting it, so those that prefer the OG will still have easy access to it.
It’s possible that there are even more changes inDead Rising Deluxe Remasterthat have yet to be revealed. Fans don’t have to wait too long to find out one way or another.Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s release date is September 19, so the wait to return to the zombie-infested mall is nearly at an end.
