Summary
TheDeadpool and Wolverineopening scene wasted no time making jokes at the expense of actor Hugh Jackman and director James Magnold’sLogan. Now,Loganco-writer Michael Green has revealed his reaction to howDeadpool and Wolverinemade fun of his film, and he was surprised by what he saw.
WhenDeadpool and Wolverinewas announced, fans were concerned about how the film would handle Jackman’s return to the belovedX-Menrole afterLoganwas widely regarded as the perfect sendofffor the character. Even when fans learned that Jackman would play a Wolverine variant from a different universe, some felt his return to the role undercut the emotional impact ofLogan’s ending. Wasting no time,Deadpool and Wolverineopened with Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth blatantly stating that this film wouldn’t respectLogan’s legacy before digging up Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton and using it to fight off Time Variance Authority officers.
During an interview withIGN,Loganco-writer Green revealed that while he was warned aboutDeadpool and Wolverine’s opening scene, it still caught him off guard. “People had warned me ahead of time, ‘Uh, I don’t know how you’re gonna feel about the opening [ofDeadpool & Wolverine]’,” Green said. “I’m like, ‘I think I know what’s gonna happen.’ And I did not know! I didn’t know they were gonna go that far.” Green also explained why he believesDeadpool and WolverinepaidLogana compliment:
You weren’t meant to take seriously that they were, like, digging him up, and that it was really him. It felt less like they were trying to change the ending ofLoganas they were contending with not feeling that they wanted to make a movie as good as they feltLoganwas, which is a huge compliment! I felt like it was nothing but complimentary.
Green is not the only person who feelsDeadpool and Wolverine is complimentary to the films it’s roasting. Many fans believeDeadpool and Wolverineis a love letterto the bygone Fox era. Fox’sX-Menfranchise is a mixed bag of critically praised and derided films and the studio’sFantastic Fourfilms are widely regarded as misfires. However,Deadpool and Wolverinemanages to make fun of this era while revering it. TheDeadpoolmovie franchise wouldn’t exist without the FoxX-Menmovies, asX-Men Origins: Wolverine’s disastrous depiction of the Merc with a Mouth prompted Reynolds to push for a proper adaptation of the character. Fox was eventually convinced to move forward with a comic-accurateDeadpoolfilm after test footage leaked to the public, which Reynolds recently admitted he may have assisted in making public. So, the filmmakers clearly understandDeadpool and Wolverineprobably wouldn’t exist without the Fox films, however uneven their quality may have been.
AlthoughDeadpool and Wolverinemay not affect the MCUmuch and it technically didn’t undo theLoganending, some fans feel the former mocked the latter. Plus,Deadpool and Wolverineconcluded with Jackman’s Wolverine variant living in the timeline as the deceasedLogan, so it could be argued thatLogan’s ending is virtually nullified. Of course,Deadpool and Wolverineis a box office sensation, so most fans don’t take issue with how the film handledLogan’s legacy.
Deadpool and Wolverineis now playing in theaters.
