Summary
Dexter: Original Sinwill explore the backstory of Dexter Morgan, as he embarks on an internship in the forensics department at Miami Metro Homicide. Patrick Gibson will play the younger version of Dexter, with Michael C. Hall narrating the series as ‘the inner voice of Dexter’. A big aspect of the prequel series will be focused on how Dexter deals with his psychotic urges, with the help of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan’s code, which seeks to make sure the young killer only targets bad people. However, at this point in his life,Dexter is an inexperienced serial killer with murderous urges that don’t necessarily differentiate between the good and bad people in society, andDexter: Original Sincould explore thisin depth.
At the start of the originalDexterseries, the titular serial killer had become a very neat monster who carried out organized kills on criminals who deserved it. However, on occasion,there was a blurring of boundaries over who fittedHarry’s code, mixed with a few cases of mistaken identity which led to innocent people being killed by Dexter.Not to mention, the people who perished because of his actions, like Maria LaGuerta, James Doakes and Debra Morgan, as well as ‘Coach’ Logan, who Dexter killed in order to escape from his jail cell at the end ofDexter: New Blood.

At San Diego Comic Con 2024, the cast and crew ofDexter: Original Singathered for a panel hosted by fellow co-star,Sarah Michelle Gellar, to discuss the new prequel series. During the panel,the title sequence forDexter: Original Sinwas exclusively shown to the excited audience.It was revealed to be a reworking of the iconic originalDextertitle sequence that featured Dexter’s morning routine before he left the house.
In the new sequence, it features Harry and Debra Morgan perfecting their routine as well. Harry has a shave, with blood dripping into the sink, and Debra listens to her ‘killer mix tape of summer 1991’ while painting her nails.There was one particular bit in the title sequence that teased an angle that could be explored when it comes to Dexter’s struggles with Harry’s code.
During the sequence, Debra is on the phone, and it has an old school chord attached to it. This chord gently wraps around Debra’s neck, which catches the eye of Dexter, who is watching intently.His eye is magnified as the chord wraps around his sister’s neck, causing him to get excited by it, and it seemingly ignites his insatiable urge to kill.It hints at the unfiltered dark passenger that could be tormenting Dexter in the prequel series.
Dexter Could Struggle With An Urge To Kill Innocent People Before Perfecting Harry’s Code
Harry Morgan noticed the darkness that existed in his adopted son, Dexter, from a very early age, and he tried to keep these urges under control, making sure he only killed people who truly deserved it.The fact that Harry had to do this points towards a period of time when Dexter considered killing an innocent victim to satisfy his urges.Dexter: Original Sincould explore Dexter’s urge to kill good people, while perfecting the code under Harry’s unofficial mentoring program.
It would probably be a step too far to have Dexter actually kill an innocent victim inDexter: Original Sin,but to show him come close would display the strong development of his character. If Dexter had killed a totally innocent victim on purpose in the original series, the audience could’ve potentially stopped rooting for him, and the same goes for the younger version of Dexter in the prequel series. The show can portray him struggling with his urges, but he can never cross that line.
There is a potential gray area that could exist for Dexter Morgan inDexter: Original Sin, where he could possibly target someone who he dislikes, but under the code of Harry, he must learn that these urges must also be kept at bay. A potential figure in Dexter’s life who could populate this gray area, could beSarah Michelle Gellar’s CSI Chief, Tanya Martin. Nothing much is known about this character, other than she is Dexter’s boss, and the job she has in the prequel is the one Dexter had in the original series. There is no mention of her inDexter, so maybe Harry’s Code led to her ending up on Dexter’s legendary kill table. Gellar’s role is a recurring one, so she might end up being the main villain ofDexter: Original Sin’s debut season.
