Summary
Dexter: Original Sinis set for an exciting debut onParamount+with Showtime on Jul 19, 2025. It’ll see the serial killer with a code embark on an internship in the forensics department at Miami Metro Homicide in 1991. Since Showtime merged with Paramount, they have been exploring opportunities to expand the universe of their most popular IP’s. The Dexter-verse has been one of those proven commodities that have experienced this treatment, with the sequel series,Dexter: Resurrectionalso on the horizon. This probably won’t be the last show in the universe, with the long rumored Trinity Killer prequel spin-off also a possibility.
Dexter: Original Sincould be the perfect way to introduce the prospect ofa Trinity Killer series, with a backdoor pilot of sorts.Of course, Dexter didn’t come into contact with Arthur ‘Trinity’ Mitchell until the fourth season of the originalDexterseries, so they can’t meet in any significant way in the prequel. However, that doesn’t mean Trinity can’t make some sort of appearance to set things up for a future solo story.

TheTrinity Killer is arguably the best Dexter villainof all time. John Lithgow played the serial killer in all 12 episodes of the legendary fourth season, and also returned in a cameo inDexter: New Blood. He has become a key part ofDexterlore, after he killed Rita Bennett, and set up a chain of events that led to Harrison trying to kill Dexter. Obviously,Trinity could return as Dexter’s GhostinDexter: Resurrection, but it would be more interesting to see a younger Arthur Mitchell appear inOriginal Sin, even if it was a brief cameo. This would introduce a new actor into the role of Trinity before expanding the backstory of the villain in his own spin-off.
Paramount and Showtime announced in February 2023that they were working on a Trinity spin-off alongside a prequel series,Dexter: Origins(which later becameDexter: Original Sin), as well asNew Bloodseason 2, which was set to be theHarrison spin-off.
In addition, SHOWTIME is exploring projects based on other characters from the DEXTER universe, such as the makings of the notorious Trinity Killer originally played by Emmy winner John Lithgow.
The sophomore season ofNew Bloodand the Trinity prequel were both later scrapped, andDexter: Resurrectionwas announced instead, whileOriginal Sinalso moved ahead. This doesn’t mean the Trinity show is completely dead in the water, it just looks like it’ll be based on how wellOriginal SinandResurrectiondo. If they were to introduce Trinity inOriginal Sin, it would increase the chances of the character getting a spin-off. Even if it didn’t materialize, it would be a nice little Easter egg for fans.
The Trinity Killer Spin-Off And Dexter: Original Sin Could Feature Regular Crossovers As The Timeline Would Match Up Nicely
It’s quite possible thatOriginal Sinwill crossover with the sequel series,Resurrection, after it emerged that an actor had been cast to play the ‘Iron Lake Doctor’, which is obviously a link to the current timeline. This direct connective tissue will surely help the Dexter-verse in its future endeavors, and it could also be the way to go for any potential Trinity Killer spin-off.If Arthur Mitchell andDexter Morgan’s origin storiesregularly intersected, it could create an exciting prequel universe. Trinity was an active serial killer in 1991, so a series could focus on this period of his life, while also featuring1970s flashbacksto the start of his murderous spree. It would make more sense to set the Trinity series in the same timeline asOriginal Sin, to create that mirroring image to Dexter’s story. Seeing how these two killers' journeys compare and contrast to one another would be a very interesting direction to go in.
It is believed that the Trinity Killer was based on thereal life serial killer case of Dennis ‘BTK’ Rader. In a similar way to the fictional Arthur Mitchell, BTK was active for many decades before his crimes were uncovered.Netflix’s true crime drama,Mindhunter, set up BTK’s story and the vibe of that show would be a very good way to approach any future Trinity killer project. It could never work in the same way asDexter, as the audience could never root for Trinity, as he is simply too dark, but that doesn’t mean his tortured past can’t be explored in more depth.
