Summary

Dexter: Resurrectionwill begin filming in January 2025, with a tentative release time frame set for the summer of that year. Michael C. Hall will be reuniting with his dark passenger in the sequel series set immediately after the events ofDexter: New Blood. It is unclear where the majority of the new series will be set, butDexter: Resurrectionshould return to the iconic location of Miami, Floridaat some point during the show’s run. That city holds the key to how the serial killer’s story could end.

Dexter: Resurrectionwill almost certainly begin in the fictional town of Iron Lake in Upstate New York, as this is where Dexter currently lies in a critical condition after being shot in the chest by his teenage son, Harrison, inDexter: New Blood’sshocking ending. However, if Dexter goes on the run after recovering from his life-threatening injuries, he could end up anywhere. Miami is probably not an option for Dexter to return to straightaway, with most of his crimes taking place in the state of Florida. However, the setting of Miami was iconic in the originalDexterseries, and it has a lot of backstory that can be explored inDexter: Resurrection.

Miami Holds The Key To Dexter’s Potential Fate

Dexter: New Bloodsaw Dexter living a new life under the assumed name of Jim Lindsay, in the sleepy town of Iron Lake in Upstate New York. Dexter’s new home was a far cry from the sun, sea and glamor of Miami, Florida, where the originalDexterseries was set. The heat and humidity of Miami was replaced by the icy cold snap of Iron Lake, where Dexter lay dying on the snowy floor of the remote forest in the final moments ofDexter: New Blood.

Ironically, it was probably the cold temperatures that helped Dexter Morgan survive a bullet to the chest. Michael C. Hall teased as much in aninterview with Variety, in the aftermath of the announcement at San Diego Comic Con 2024 of his return inDexter: Resurrection. As great of a location as Iron Lake was inDexter: New Blood, many fans missed Dexter’s old haunts in Miami.Dexter: Resurrectionshould return to the iconic location of Miami, but if it does,it needs to service the story.

The potential climax to Dexter’s story does create a logical reason to return to the sunshine state inDexter: Resurrection.Clyde Phillips revealed the alternateDexterendinghe would have pitched if he had still been the showrunner when the series initially ended in 2013. It would have seen Dexter on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. IfDexter: Resurrectionchooses to go down this route when it eventually ends,it could see Dexter returning to Miami to be executed, with the death penalty the ultimate punishment for the crimes Dexter committed in the state of Florida.

EvenifDexter: Resurrectiondoesn’t opt for this particular ending, Miami would still be a fitting location to end the series in.Dexter was born in Miami, and his childhood trauma is intrinsically linked to this location. IfDexter: Resurrectionwants to further explore this side of the character, there is every chance Miami could return in the form of flashbacks toDexter’s first kill. Alternatively, it could return toDexter’s mother’s murder. As long as the ending is satisfying, it doesn’t need to take place in Miami, but it would be great if it did.

A Return To Miami Could Bring Legacy Characters Back

The prequel series,Dexter: Original Sin, will return to Miami, Florida, and it will air in December 2024.Fans are bound to get nostalgic when seeing a young Dexter suited up in his forensic apparatus in the sunny setting of Miami, alongside fellow younger versions of legacy characters. InDexter: Resurrection’s timeline, Angel Batista (David Zayas) is now the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide. Thanks to an Easter egg inDexter: New Blood, it was also confirmed that Detective Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) and dirty-minded forensics lab geek, Vince Masuka (C. S Lee) were also still residing in Miami, and very much still employed by the police department.

There is every chanceDexter: Resurrectionwill bring backDexter’s best legacy characters, but all three of these fan favorites are very much tied to Miami. Their return could quite feasibly happen on their stomping ground. Angel Batista was on his way to Iron Lake in the final episode ofDexter: New Blood, but as the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide, he’ll likely have to return to Miami at some point. If Batista is to play a significant part inDexter: Resurrection(and he should), Miami could once again be a much featured location in the Dexter universe.
