Summary
The new hit strategy remake,Age Of Mythology: Retold, gives players a chance to revisit an upgraded version of a classic game in theAge Of Empiresseries. Although there are an endless number of strategies to use against human enemies in an RTS such as this, there are some mistakes that players can make sure they avoid, ones that most new players make and have to learn to avoid the hard way.
The sorts of mistakes that can easily be made infast-paced strategy games such asAge Of Mythology: Retoldwill be easily avoided by veterans of the genre. But if players are left scratching their heads as to why they lose so many multiplayer match-ups or are maybe even struggling to beat certain campaign levels, there is usually a simple fix.
8Not Enough Villagers
The Fastest Way To Fall Behind On Resources
In any multiplayer game inAge Of Mythology Retold, players will begin with a villager or two from their civilization. These are to help get started with gathering resources, but many players make the mistake of doing anything else before training more villagers. All resources are important and necessary to advance in the game, and players need to create a huge number of villagers in order to get a jump on their enemieswhen it comes to gathering resources.
Even a defensive, slow-building type of player requires many villagers quickly. Some players will prioritize saving their food to get to the Classical Age faster, but this isn’t necessary at all when compared with the importance of many villagers gathering immediately, especially againsthuman opponents or higher-difficulty AI. Having the savings in resources to defend yourself against attack or mount quick offensives, and getting technologies to give you an edge, is all dependent on training many villagers and putting them to work immediately.
7Not Scouting
Knowing What Is On The Map And Where Is Invaluable
It is another easy mistake to stay where the player starts without any regard for the locations of important items on the map. Not only is it valuable to know where resources, water, and enemies are across the playing field, but players who scout earliest will also have the chance to gather relics. These special boxes can be lifted by heroes and stored in temples to gain a huge variety of benefits.
It is easy to make the mistake of backing away from venturing out. For Atlantean players, the Oracle unit gains favor based on how much they explore. But all civilizations need to see more of the mapfor any number of reasons. Keeping in the dark in the early game will set players at a serious disadvantage.
6Holding Up In One Corner
It Is Easy To Defend A Small Area, But Expansion Is Important
Many players starting out will try to get a feel for the game by playing defensively. This isn’t inherently a bad idea, but building walls and focusing on a small area at the beginning will haunt players by the end of the game. Other players will expand fast, meaning more resources at their disposal, more settlements where they can build town centers, and almost certainly have the troops to overwhelm whatever defenses the player has laid down in their remote corner of the map.
The problem with focusing on defending one area too heavily is that winning will require venturing out from this relative safety eventually and finding a huge chunk of the map with enemy buildings and defenses, weakening your armies before they can get near a proper enemy base, will be the end of many players' games, or will at least turn the game into a long grindwhen it normally doesn’t require any grinding. Think about expansion, or at least not defending too heavily in one small area, from the beginning of any match.
5Focusing Too Much On One Game Element
Resources, Defence, Progress & Attack Are All Important
There are certain elements ofAge Of Mythology: Retoldthat may not seem overly important to new players. Attacking early in the game can seem like a silly strategy, and some players will think that upgrades aren’t as important as training more and more units all the time. All of these parts of the game are significant, and an easy mistake early in the game is to focus on building resources and buildings without training units or to gather plenty of units but leave no resources spare to buy upgrades.
Balance is the word that best describes this tip. Players have to make sure to look at the whole game and not become tunnel-visioned over certain elements. Trying to constantly produce units for attack leads to a shortage of resources and technologies. Trying to focus on buying technologies does the reverse, and too much of your resources spent solely on attack or defense leaves a vulnerability. Balance is the biggest focus from early in the game onwards.
4Big Attacks Early In The Game
Basic Defenses Make These Attacks Worthless
A player can get to work on resources, get to the Classical Age, and get a basic army together fairly quickly. However, using this whole army for one major attack can disrupt and set an enemy back, but it also means the player will fall behind on resources, defense, and technologies. Also, the attack isn’t likely to kill that enemy player off, since an early-game army will be at a much bigger disadvantage against any building defenses than a late-game one.
A town center itself will kill most of an army’s worth of soldiers who haven’t been upgraded before it is taken down. Early-game armies won’t include siege weapons, making the process of taking buildings down tedious. Players can attack early in the game but should focus on raiding parties designed to disrupt the gathering of resources, setting the enemy player behind in the game from the get-go.
3Not Building Everything Available
Every Building Has A Use And Should Be Utilized
Age Of Mythology Retoldcomes with a lot of buildings, and new players will often leave some out. An armory, for example, never has to be built for any particular reason but should be made use of for the important upgrades to units available there, which can bedependent upon which God the player starts with.
Each civilization has different buildings, but players should make sure they don’t ignore possible upgrades from across the buildings. Just remember as a new player that, though it may not be your favorite type of strategy, a wide selection of buildings is hugely important, especially during an attack when defenders will be trained much faster if they are coming from many different buildings.
2Focus On Temporary Resources
Long-Term Planning Wins In Lengthy Contests
Age Of Mythology Retoldbattles can end quickly, but they can just as easily turn into wars of attrition that force players to rely on more than just the resources available on the map. Especially in games with many different teams, resources like trees and gold mines disappear fast, and leave many players panicking as they attempt to ensure they still have enough resources to survive against better-prepared enemies.
Wood is a problem in late-game once trees start running out, but food can be gained perpetually from farms or fishing, as long as players set up safe spots for villagers or fishing ships to start gathering. Gold can be gained with a good caravan route to a market, which again requires a safe place to do so, making multiple town centers with solid safety a priority, as well for players to begin building early in the game.
1Not Aging Up Carefully
Don’t Just Pick Your Favorite Myth Unit
There are many ways to win inAge Of Mythology: Retold. One of the most common is knowing the Minor God choices you are best making from the beginning. As the early game moves into late game, a player’s entire civilization will shift based on which Gods they choose to follow, the upgrades and God powers received are a huge part of what makes a God choice important. This is something thatplayers can learn early in the campaign with the Greek civilization.
Many beginners will choose the larger and more dangerous-looking myth unit, but this isn’t always the most important factor. An upgrade that looks simple such as Valley of the Kings, which trains War Elephants much faster. This might not seem like a huge deal, but armies of War Elephants that can be created in a matter of seconds can be a game-ender with enough resources, so players should look and learn more about the various advantages of each Minor God before advancing too far.
