St. Trina is an important NPC that is revealed to the player inElden Ring’sShadow of the ErdtreeDLC. She can be found in the depths of the Coffin Fissure,guarded by the Putrescent Knightand hidden in a cave filled with beautiful purple flowers.
She has a beautiful visage, and gives the player some important pieces of lore that help explain the situation in the Land of the Shadows. She sheds light on Miquella’s intentions and misgivings, revealing the hesitation the would-be deity had.
Spoiler Alert: major lore implications will be discussed as they related to the story of Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree.
St. Trina’s Appearance In Shadow Of The Erdtree
St. Trina has a small, delicate body and wears a simple flowing dress. In the DLC, she iscradled inside a large purple flower, and her skin has a purple tinge to it as well. SinceSt. Trina is a part of Miquella, she is also affected by the same curse, giving her a perpetually youthful appearance.
That being said, there are some depictions of her in adult form in the Lands Between as well, though these are said to beunsettling. The exact gender of the titular saint is up for debate, with some item descriptions stating that some believe the saint to be male, while others consider St. Trina female.
The True Identity Of St. Trina In Elden Ring
Simply put, St. Trina isa part of Miquellathat thedemigod discardedwhen he entered the realm of the shadows. In his ambition to become a god, Miquella shed parts of himself as he progressed through the Land of Shadows,leaving behind fragments of himselfthat would stop him from achieving godhood.
One of these fragments is St. Trina, the part of Miquella that feltlove and compassion. According to the Miquella’s Cross found on the Cerulean Coast, Miquella discarded his “doubt and vacillation.” If you progress further into the area and go through the Fissure, you will find the Fissure Cross, which reads as follows:
I abandon here my love.
Soon after this cross, the player comes across St. Trina, implying that she is the love that Miquella discarded.According to Thiollier’s dialoguein the game, St. Trina is the “discarded half” of Miquella.
However, it is important to note that St. Trina existed in the base game as well. From items likeSword of St. Trina,St. Trina’s Torch, andTrina’s Lily, it’s clear she had a following of her own in the Lands Between. Thiollier, an NPC in the DLC, is one such follower, who decided to join Miquella’s cause to follow after his beloved St. Trina.
Interestingly, St. Trina isn’t the only instance of an NPC splitting themselves.Marika, the infamous goddesswho birthed the demigods, also had another version of herself, i.e., Radagon, as explored inCorhyn’s and Goldmask’s storyline. This means that splitting oneself is an attribute inherent to the gods — or perhaps it is a requirement for godhood itself. That theory is further substantiated by the fact that Miquella discarded his emotions, fears, and even his body to become a god.
St. Trina’s Powers In Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree
As a part of a god, St. Trina is a powerful individual whocommands a great following. Although she seems to be quite powerful, she doesn’t use that power for violence. According to lore, she is part of Miquella that can love. Even after she is abandoned by Miquella, she continues to love him. So much so, thatshe begs the player to kill Miquella, because she believes that godhood would be a cage for him, constraining him with shackles of divinity and responsibility.
The greatest powers of St. Trina is that ofdreams and sleep. She is said to appear in the dreams of her followers, granting them a restful sleep. She also produces a nectar that can put her followers into a deep and restful sleep, though this same nectar is lethal to most people, putting them into a sleep from which they can never wake. When she enters the Land of Shadows, this power evolves, giving her the power of Eternal Sleep, so that even her devout follower, Thiollier, is unable to resist the power of her sleep.
Most items related to St. Trina cause sleep in one way or another. Imbibing her nectar in the game will put the player to eternal sleep,killing them. Trina’s Lily is used to make Sleepbone Arrows and sleep pots, both of which cause Sleep buildup.The Sword of St. Trinaand theVelvet Sword of St. Trinaboth cause sleep and eternal sleep build-up, respectively.
