Summary
Dragon Age: The Veilguardgives playersthree types of classes, each with their own specializations. The game also has seven companions that can join players on their journey. Each of these characters has their own playstyle that is reminiscent of these specializations.
New players should read upon some of the important elements of the game to gain a firm grasp of which companions will compliment the choices they have made. This will result in a well-oiled party that can overcome whatever the game throws their way. All the game’s companions are good, but here’s how they rank against each other.
Updated on March 7th, 2025 by Chad Thesen:There have been 7 companions for the game since its launch. No new companions have been added. This article has been updated for the purpose of adding additional information for each of these existing companions. This comes in the form of tables that contain each ability at their disposal. This can help players see how each of them play, and what conditions they can apply and detonate. Knowing which conditions each companion can set up and detonate can have a big impact on whether the player wishes to have them as part of their group. If the player applies Overwhelm, then they know they will need either Lucanis or Harding to detonate it for them.
7Taash
Fire Warrior
There are many different damage types in the game, such as Cold, Electricity, and Fire. Players that want to increase their Fire damage will want Taash in the mix. Taash is very brutish, like the typical barbarian-style character, but they have a much deeper layer of personality for players that wantexplore their relationshipwith the character.
Taash is not a bad companion, but they don’t bring as oomf as the others. Players that are a Champion Specialization will have little to no need for another warrior, and Mages and Rogues will fare much better with Darvin acting as their frontliner.

6Davrin
Tanky Warrior
Davrin is astalwart and stern individual, as well as being a member of the Grey Wardens. He brings a lot of warrior flair to the game, and is perfect for players that want a frontliner while they play either a midrange or glassy option. He can attract the aggro of enemies and can take quite a beating as well.
At his side is Assan, his pet Griffin. Assan is not just for aesthetic flair alongside Darvin’s character, and is incorporated into how he can play in combat. Assan gets his name from the Elven word for Arrow. Heroic Strike can apply Overwhelmed for party members to detonate, while Death from Above will detonate any applied Weakened states.

5Neve
Ice Mage
Neve has a strong sense of right and wrong, fighting against injustice to the point she wouldmake just as great a paladinas she does a Mage. She provides a lot of Cold damage focus, and players who want or need more of this damage type will want Neve as their party’s Mage.
Neve is a ranged mage, meaning she will synergize well with Warriors who are up close and personal. However, she doesn’t synergize as well as the other two mage options. This is due to her applying Weakened and detonating Sundered, instead of the other way around.
Time Slow
Neve uses her talents as a frost mage to slow the world around you.
Slows enemies and companions, but you continue moving and attacking at normal speed.
Replenish
The streets of Minrathous and well beyond require an abundance of caution.

4Bellara
Controller Mage
It’s easy to see that Bellara will bea lot of players' favorite character, despite how she synergizes. She is a creative and intelligent individual who has a thirst for knowledge and a deep curiosity for ancient artifacts. She is also an interesting and delightful character to interact with that can bring a lot of enjoyment to players throughout the game.
Like Neve, Bellara does well with a frontliner soaking up the aggro. Players that apply Sundered as a Warrior can have Ballara detonate it; players can also have her apply Weakened for another party member to detonate. She also provides a lot of Electricity damage synergy.
Enfeebling Shot
Bellara fires a magic-infused shot from her bow, dousing her target in Fade magic.
Deals Electric Damage and deals high Stagger.

Bellara channels the energy of the Fade through her gauntlet to unleash a volley of magic projectiles.
Deals Electricity damage and applies Shocked.
Sundered
Veil Jumpers never know what the Fade might throw at them.
3Emmrich
Summoner Mage
Emmrich has a lot of flair and personality, while also being a well-versed intellectual. Players will meet him at the Grand Necropolis through Bellara. He is capable of summoning minions that can deal damage and help players keep their distance from enemies. He can apply and detonate the same states as Bellara, meaning players can use him as an alternative if they so wish.
Emmrich is a great option for a player using a Rogue, but players will definitely want their other party member to be as tanky as possible. This spreads out damage against the party and increases survivability as a whole. If things go south, Emmrich is also a great support option that can offer healing. Players looking to build around Stagger will want to experiment with having Emmrich in their party.
Final Rites
Emmrich summons an envoy of the dead who explodes in a blast of necrotic energy.
Deals Necrotic damage to the target and all enemies within 4 meters of it.
38 seconds
Emmrich summons spirits to entangle and hinder your enemies.
Deals Necrotic damage and deals high Stagger.
A wise Mourn Watcher prepares for all manner of danger; no one should pass before their time.
The Bell Tolls
Emmrich casts a death curse that, after a short delay, causes an enemy to explode with necrotic energy.
Deals Necrotic damage and applies Quietus to targets, dealing increased damage.
A tricky technique that grips the essence of any creature, living or dead, causing time to slow to a crawl.
2Lucanis
Melee Rogue
Both top picks for this list are among the Rogue class, with the first being the more melee focused of the two. Lucanis is the epitome of a dashing rogue and champion of the people, and he has a big heart despite being an Assassin.
Players who want this companion in their party will want to heavily explore single target damage as opposed to area-of-effect. This will allow them to drop enemies at an alarming rate and reduce the overall damage that can be done to the party in a fight. Lucanis is a great choice both early on and late into the game.
Soothing Potion
A Talon is ready for anything and never without a potent concoction on hand.
Overwhelmed
Adrenaline Rush
Lucanis gives a rousing shout, motivating you to act with renewed determination.
19 seconds
Abominate
Lucanis sweeps the area with demonic strength.
Deals Necrotic damage, high Barrier damage, and applies Knocked Down to enemies.
1Harding
DPS Rogue
No matter the party composition, having Harding in the group greatly ups its damage. She has a very trustworthy presence, and is someone her allies can always rely on. She is also a returning character frompreviousDragon Agegames.
Not only can Harding rain down plenty of damage, but she is also perfect for being the group’s support and providing crowd control. She is perfect for Warriors, Mages and even other Rogues to bring along to just make everything go smoother. If players have Bellara or Emmrich in their party, they can apply Sundered for Harding to detonate. This makes her aclear pick to have by Rook’s sideover others.
Deals Physical damage and deals high Stagger.
An expert scout carries only the best resources. This special brew is a pick-me-up like no other.
Heavy Draw
Harding draws her bowstring back as far as it will go, unleashing a devastating shot.
Seismic Shot
