Summary
Interesting and challenging enemies are essential to any role-playing game, andFallout 4has no shortage of such opponents. The sleek, fast, and deadly Assaultron Dominator strikes fear into any under-leveled player’s heart. Meanwhile, the Nukalurks, Fog Crawlers, and Gulpers look like Lovecraftian horrors brought into the world ofFallout. Despite sharing the same universe as its previous titles, one opponent fromFallout3andFallout76doesn’t exist inFallout 4’s Boston for some reason.
The rogues gallery in theFalloutuniverse is quite diverse, and they’re a sad and frightening reflection of the nuclear apocalypse. Some humans mutated into Feral Ghouls due to radiation degrading their brains. Decades of radiation exposure mutated wildlife like wolves and bears, making them more fearsome. One enemy type inFallout 3andFallout 76further explores the effects of radiation on an organism in combination with other factors, which would’ve been interesting to see in the latest mainline title.
Fallout 3 and Fallout 76’s Trogs Would Have Been a Great Addition to Fallout 4’s Roster of Enemies
The Trogs were introduced to the franchise in theFallout 3DLCThe Pittand they make a return inFallout 76’sExpeditons: The Pittexpansion. They look similar to Ghouls, and it’s mostly because they’re also humans who mutated into their current forms due to radiation. However, Trogs develop longer arms and adopt a frog-like stance. Other serious factors contribute to their mutation as well.
Why Trogs are Unique to The Pitt
One good reason for the Trogs’ absence inFallout 4is that their kind has a mutation that only occurs withinThe Pitt. This area is rebuilt from the remnants of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it’s mostly controlled by Raiders and slavers. This town was once known as the “Steel City,” which is why it’s filled with abandoned steel mills and factories.
The pollution created by industrial sites, combined with radiation exposure, can turn humans into Trogs. This phenomenon is called the“Troglodyte Degeneration Contagion” or TDC, and it affects about 20% of The Pitt’s citizens. It’s implied that such factors are unique to the city, which is likely why Trogs don’t exist in other cities likeFallout 4’s Boston.
The Tragedy of the Trogs Should be Explored Some More
People who turn into Trogs often become feral and attempt to attack everything they see, including people they’ve known all their lives. While they are hostile, most Trogs are far from evil. Their voice lines suggest that they’re in a perpetual state of hunger and pain.
The tragic story of the Trogs and the search for a TDC cure would have been an intriguing storyline to explore inFallout 4. Air pollution is a real-life problem that plagues the state of Massachusetts, so a variation of the Trogs could have been a relevant addition to the game. If Bethesda wantsTDC to be unique to the conditions of Pittsburgh, it would be nice to see if there was any progress made for a cure. A major player inFO3’s The Pitt storyline had a child named Marie who was immune to the disease, but her fate was ambiguous due to the DLC’s multiple endings. Knowing what happened to her after the events of the DLC would have given players some closure.
Fallout 4likely won’t see any new expansions, so players shouldn’t expect to see Trogs in the game anytime soon. Still, perhaps sequels will return to a TDC-free Pittsburgh. However, the world ofFalloutafterThe Great Waris immensely corrupt and violent, so such an outcome for The Pitt’s citizens may just be wishful thinking.
