Summary
Fallout: New Vegasdirector Josh Sawyer has recently talked about the possibility of working on theFalloutfranchise again, indicating that he would only return to it if his team had enough creative freedom. Released in 2010,Fallout: New Vegashad a rough launch mired by bugs, but it eventually became a cult classic amongFalloutfans.
Josh Sawyer started as a designer at Black Isle Studios in 1999, working on RPGs such asIcewind Dale 1and2, and the never-released originalFallout 3, codenamedVan Buren. At Obsidian Entertainment, Sawyer acted as the director of games such asFallout: New Vegas,Pentiment, and the twoPillars of Eternity. Due to how wellNew Vegasis received by part of theFalloutfanbase, Sawyer is often asked whether he would like to work on the franchise again, especially considering thatMicrosoft currently owes both Obsidianand Bethesda.
Now, in a recent Q&A video, Sawyer explained what it would take for him to work onFalloutagain. According to him, the most important aspect of the decision would be regarding how much he could do with the franchise. “I think with any IP, especially one I’ve worked with before, what do I want to do this time that I wasn’t able to do last time?” the designer commented. If the constraints were just too tight, he would not be very interested in returning to the game’s universe.
Josh Sawyer Talks About Working on the Fallout Franchise Again
I think with any IP, especially one I’ve worked with before, what do I want to do this time that I wasn’t able to do last time?
This is not the first time thatSawyer commented on a possible return toFallout. Back in 2022, for example, the director showed interest in returning toFallout’s world, especially in a game set in locations such as California or the Midwest.
Earlier this year,Sawyer also commented on theFalloutTV show, speaking about New Vegas’ brief appearance in the series, and how he would feel if other creators changed the lore he previously created. Sawyer had a pretty level-headed answer, explaining that he “did not care” whatever happens to the characters or the locations he created, as he understands that he does not own theFalloutuniverse, and can’t stop things from changing over time with new creative teams.
Right now,Obsidian seems to be working on a new unannounced project. While many fans are surely expecting it to beFallout: New Vegas 2, which would make sense considering the huge success of the TV show, it’s currently unknown what the project is, and if Sawyer is involved.
