Summary
Godzilla Minus Onedirector Takashi Yamazaki had a hand in designing one of the movie’s latest posters, gradually deciding to make it more and more ridiculous. He recalled this anecdote during a recentComic-Conappearance, much to the amusement of the event’s attendees.
Godzilla Minus Oneoriginally premiered in October 2023 and established itself as one of the most universally praised blockbuster movies of the year. The positive buzz surrounding it culminated with an Oscar win in the Best Visual Effects category at the 96thAcademy Awards. The movie has recently returned to North America for a second theatrical run, which kicked off on November 1.
Ahead of this re-release,Godzilla Minus Onedirector Takashi Yamazaki appeared at the 2024 edition of the New York Comic-Con in late October 2024. Game Rant can now exclusively share a video excerpt from his panel talk, during which he recalled a humorous story about how one of the posters for theGodzilla Minus Onere-releasecame to be. The visual in question features Godzilla taking on a battleship—a scene that has been repeatedly revised at Yamazaki’s request.
Yamazaki Kept Asking for a Bigger Godzilla on the Movie Poster
All of these revisions were prompted by a singular piece of feedback: Godzilla wasn’t big enough. Yamazaki recalled how he kept asking the designers to make the monster bigger until they delivered a comically large take on the creature that looked like it could eat even thestrongest movie versions of Godzillafor breakfast. The anecdote clearly entertained some of the panel’s attendees, as the audience’s laughter grew louder while Yamazaki was recounting the story.
Yamazaki Ended Up With a Godzilla That’s Twice as Big as It’s Supposed to Be
After the poster was already finalized, the creative team behind it did some scale comparisons with the help of computer-generated imagery. This is when Yamazaki learned that the Godzilla he ended up with was approximately twice as large as it is depicted in his critically acclaimed movie. That notwithstanding, he suggested that the final result appears to fit well with the epic nature of the film.
SinceGodzilla Minus Onefirst hit theaters, Yamazaki put out another project in the form ofFoodlosslla, a short web film that debuted in March 2024. The Japanese filmmaker is also already working on yetanotherGodzillamovie, which was confirmed to be in development in early November 2024. Much like its predecessor, this untitled project will be produced by Toho Studios, with Yamazaki being expected to handle direction, writing, and VFX supervision.
