While fans were excited to see a physical release happening, they were quick to note one minor detail on the cover art forHawkeye. Revisiting the Rumors of Hawkeye Season 2
It has been nearly three years sinceHawkeyeconcluded its first season on Disney+, and thus far, Marvel Studios has yet to officially comment on the future of the series. That hasn’t stopped rumors from suggesting that a second season has already been ordered, though. In fact, earlier this year,reports suggested Season 2 was a go, with details even surfacing regarding the second season’s plot. Still, Marvel Studios has been quiet regardingHawkeye, and what it plans to do with the show’s characters going forward. This, of course, shouldn’t be surprising, asHawkeye’s leading man, Jeremy Renner, endured a life-threatening accident on January 1st, 2023. With the actor’s health and well-being a priority, there was no rush from Marvel Studios to try and work on a second season - at least, not until the actor was healthy enough to do it. Renner has begun to get back to a sense of normality, having returned to work onMayor of Kingstownearlier this summer. With Renner back in front of the camera, rumors ofHawkeye’s potential second season seemed to only escalate, giving fans hope that they’d get to see a potential showdown between the Barton brothers in a second season of the Disney+ series.
With the phrasing of “first season” on the steelbook case,it could lend credence to these rumors. After all, Marvel Studios is typically careful with how it words things. In the case ofWandaVision, for example, it was labeled as the complete series, whileLokimade sure to state “the complete first season” and “the complete second season.” However, it’s also worth noting that this doesn’t mean anything, asMoon Knightis also labeled as “the complete first season,” and recent reports suggest a second season isn’t on the horizon anytime soon. So, what does this mean for the future ofHawkeye?
Is Marvel Studios Ready to Renew Hawkeye for a Second Season?
While rumors continue to circulate regardingHawkeye, nothing is confirmed until Marvel Studios announces it. Or, in the case ofWonder Man, until the press confirms it is happening. As it stands, there are no official reports of a second season ofHawkeyehappening. This is neither a good or bad thing. After all, Marvel Studios did previously state it would be scaling back its offerings on Disney+ after stumbling with some releases likeThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier,Secret Invasion, and evenShe-Hulk. The studio wants to focus on quality, rather than quantity. While there areat least three live-action Marvel Studios showsset to hit Disney+ next year, those projects have been in development for a long time, withIronhearthaving actually been filmed years ago. These are not new projects that the studio is seeking to make, but rather projects that have been in post-production awaiting release. With that in mind, it’s unlikely we’ll see another large release from Marvel on Disney+ for some time. As exciting asHawkeyeis, and as great as it would be to see another series receive a second season outside ofLoki, it’s also important to note that there is still an overarching story being told within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The studio has already had to revamp its film slate after being forced to switch up its big bad from Kang the Conqueror to Doctor Doom. Trying to fit other television shows on its already massive slate featuring a huge multiversal story, could prove incredibly difficult. The Marvel Television banner does allow for the studio to tell new stories, much likeAgatha All Along, that can exist within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet standalone with little to no problem. However, a second season ofHawkeyeseems unlikely to do that. So, while a second season is entirely possible, it doesn’t seem likely - at least, not yet.
