Warner Bros Discovery’s music label WaterTower has now shared a new behind-the-scenes video detailing how theBatman: Caped Crusadersoundtrack came to be, which Game Rant can exclusively reveal. The four-minute clip starts with Wiedmann proclaiming himself to be a massivefan ofBatman: The Animated Series, saying he was ecstatic to be asked to join the nextBatmanproject by legendary animator and producer Bruce Timm.

Batman: Caped Crusader Intentionally Sounds Like a ’40s Movie

Moving on to the actual process of scoring the series, Wiedmann revealed that one of the earliestBatman: Caped Crusadercreative decisionsthat was made was to have the show’s OST sound like a 1940s movie. With that in mind, he first spent a lot of time listening to the works of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann, and other prominent figures from that era, analyzing how they utilized harmonies, orchestration techniques, and melodies, among other things. His findings were used as the basis for the overall style of theBatman: Caped Crusaderoriginal soundtrack, which is grand, dramatic, and imposing.

The video also sees Wiedmann confirm that each villain’s theme in the show was informed by their character traits. One of the least subtle examples of this approach is the Catwoman theme, which features long sections of stringed instruments that literally sound like a cat meowing. Similarly, Firebug’s theme seeks to reflect both his violent nature and childlike characteristics, which it does by being dark and simple enough for a child to easily hum. Wiedmann likened this musical number to a children’s lullaby.

The show’s Season 1 soundtrack can currently be streamed via Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, and SoundCloud, in addition to being available for purchase via iTunes.Batman: Caped CrusaderSeason 2 is also in the works, and is presently targeting a 2025 release. Matt Reeves, one of the show’s executive producers, has recently suggested that a third season might be on the cards as well.
