Summary

At every corner,Marvel Rivalshas been compared to hero shooters that have come before it. WithMarvel Rivalsfollowing the typical hero shooter formula quite closely in many ways, these comparisons are only natural, and in the case of certain character abilities, there are some undeniable similarities to some of those found inOverwatch. That being said,Marvel Rivalsis far from a shameless copy.

Several key features separateMarvel Rivalsfrom the rest of the hero shooter crowd. One of the most obvious isMarvel Rivals' third-person perspective, allowing players to embody these iconic heroes and villains fully. Another key distinguishing feature ofMarvel Rivalsis its team-up abilities, which will undoubtedly add a whole new layer of excitement when NetEase announces new additions to the roster.

Marvel Rivals' Team-Up Abilities Make New Roster Additions Even More Exciting

Marvel Rivals' Team-Up Abilities Can Offer Some Great Fan-Service

One of the most important features that separatesMarvel Rivalsfrom the likes ofOverwatchis the game’s team-up abilities. There are currently10 unique team-up abilities inMarvel Rivals, with each one granting certain players some specific bonuses or special powers. These team-up abilities tend to group characters that are related to one another either by moveset or by the comic teams they belong to.

For instance,Groot and Rocket Raccoonshare a team-up ability named “Planet X Pals,” where Rocket attaches himself to Groot’s shoulders, reducing both players' damage intake by 50%, and allowing Rocket to heal his ally even faster. This team-up ability plays on Rocket and Groot’s close friendship seen across Marvel media. Luna Snow, Namor, and Jeff the Land Shark’s team-up ability, however, revolves around their similar powers, with Luna Snow changing Namor and Jeff’s water attacks to icy ones.

Marvel Rivals' team-up abilities are already incredibly creative and offer up some nice fan-service, but there’s no shortage of possibilities for future team-up attacks, with there being almost limitless source material to draw inspiration from whenever a new hero or villain is added to the roster. For example, ifAnt-Man and Hawkeyeare ever added toMarvel Rivals, they could have a team-up move that sees the former attach himself to one of the latter’s arrows as a form of traversal, just like the cover ofAvengers#223. A Wolverine and Colossus Fastball Special team-up would also be an obvious but great bit of fan-service.

New Marvel Rivals Characters Can Shake Up The Meta In A Few Ways

ButMarvel Rivals' team-up abilities can be far more than just fan-service. Normally, in a hero shooter, a new addition to the roster also means a bit of a shake-up for the game’s meta, with certain team combos suddenly making weaker characters much more viable. This will likely be even more true forMarvel Rivalsthanks to its team-up abilities.

When a new member of the roster arrives inMarvel Rivals, fans won’t only need to predict how their new abilities are going to affect the game’s general flow and meta, but also how their new team-up abilities could impact the game. For instance, one of theweaker characters inMarvel Rivals' current roster is Black Panther, but if a new hero joined the roster with a team-up ability that greatly enhanced his powers, then that could drastically change the hero’s public perception and how often he’s chosen. These team-up abilities are going to be hard forMarvel Rivalsto balance, but they should keep players on their toes regardless.
