Though Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic franchise,Fallout, has been largely dormant in terms of new game releases, the recent Amazon TV series along with other popular tie-ins have brought it more into the limelight. And while it’s pretty much assured the nextFalloutwill eventually come after the studio’s other current projects, it will probably be some time before fans receive more details about where the fifth main title will take them and what its story framework will be.
So far, players have explored the ruins of America from California and Nevada toWashington, D.C. and Massachusetts inFallout, all with their own storied histories. However, there is one location introduced inFallout 3DLC that saw players heading into what had become known as The Pitt, formerly Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The brutal state of the city and the machinations within The Pitt made for some of the most interesting and morally gray questlines in the series, and The Pitt’s status makes it an important location that could come into play inFallout 5.
Fallout’s Pittsburg Is Still an Important Factor in the Wasteland Going Into FO5
The Pitt in Fallout
Fallout’s version of Pittsburghas experienced an arguably more tumultuous time than most since the bombs dropped. Similar to its real-life counterpart, it was a major hub for steel mining and production of wartime goods like Vertibirds and power armor. This made it a big target during The Great War, and the city was hit hard in the conflict. Afterward, scattered collections of raiders seized the remains of the city. But due to the dosing of radiation The Pitt received, a genetic disease began turning residents into “Trogs” and “Wildmen,” devolving them into creatures akin to feral ghouls.
Sometime later, aBrotherhood of Steelbattalion led byFallout 3’s Owyn Lions enacted a cleansing of The Pitt, known as the Scourge. While it was nominally successful, they left behind initiate Ishmael Ashur, who was presumed lost. After recovering, Ashur forcefully united the survivors under his rule, and put them to task restarting The Pitt’s mills and factories, separating the population into his loyal faction of ruthless slavers and those who were pressed into service.
The Pitt was also featured in an Expedition forFallout 76, and survivors of the city founded the settlement of Foundation in the Appalachian region.
How The Pitt Could Connect to Fallout 5
The situation described above wasn’t as clear-cut as it seemed, though, and players could discover that Ashur met a scientist, Sandra, and the two were married and had a daughter, Marie. Marie was born immune to theTrog disease. The couple planned to research this immunity, intending to eventually produce a cure, though it would take time, during which Ashur would maintain his grip on the city and continue to oversee operations. Players inFallout 3could either help overthrow Ashur’s rule, or assist him by putting down a rebellion and ostensibly giving him and Sandra more time to work on the cure. Whether Bethesda decides to consider one as canon will likely affect how The Pitt appears inFallout’s future.
There have been clues and rumors that point toFallout 5’s settingshifting back to the West Coast, specifically San Francisco. This might make it more difficult to connect directly to The Pit. But the fact that it remains a strategic stronghold and has the resources to create necessary equipment means that it represents a valuable asset and thus may still come into play, or at least be mentioned in the next game. This could be via quests similar toFallout 3’s The Replicated Man, which connected toFallout 4’s Institute, or perhaps in a followup DLC.
Another factor will be where the next title sits inFallout’s timeline, as players could see the repercussions of previous choices made, or at least the current state of affairs in The Pitt. Perhaps the city has stabilized and expanded outward in trade relations, or the cure has indeed been completed, which would surely affect its standing in the Wasteland. In any case, The Pitt has great potential to be revisited inFalloutdue to its unique position, and could be featured again in some surprising and satisfying ways.
