Marvel Studios fans have only just been introduced to Vanessa Kirby’s version of Sue Storm inThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, but she’s already looking ahead to the future. While it’s unclear what direction she will end up taking, Kirby has a clear idea in mind, and it’s slightly more sinister and evil than people might imagine.
Even though Storm is a beloved hero as the Invisible Woman,The Fantastic Four: First Stepsstar does have a slightly darker and more menacing side within the comic books. Storm is a character that superhero fans are well aware of at this point, due to the numerous live-action adaptations of the character. People understand her romantic connection to Reed Richardsand the powers that she is capable of displaying, but not everyone knows that there is an alter ego that Marvel Studios could tap into at some stage. That character is Malice, the darker side of the Invisible Woman, often referred to as the ‘Mistress of Hate,’ which gives people an idea of just how powerful this character is. She uses her powers to an extreme level, often playing with the minds of her enemies in a bid to cause as much carnage and pain as possible. She’s less about teamwork and helping people and more about hurting others, which isn’t the norm for a superhero. However, Kirby explained to theHappy Sad Confused podcastthat she wants to portray Malice at some stage in the future.
“I always love Malice because it’s almost like a part of her that needs to come out, to be expressed, that, while she is committed to being altruistic and being a leader and doing good in the world, she also has a shadow side, like we all do, which has to come out in order for her then, in the comics, to become Invisible Woman. She renames herself from Invisible Girl. So she becomes a woman by going through a dark time, and I always loved that journey. I thought it felt very true.
There are currently no confirmed plans for Malice to beintroduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universeat this stage. However, with Marvel Studios now able to utilize these characters, the possibilities are endless. The fact that Kirby is actively excited about potentially playing the role makes it even more exciting, as she’s actively done her research and is interested in this version of the character.
Marvel Studios Should Embrace Sue Storm Being Even More Powerful
Showcasing Malice Would Open Up Even More Powers To Utilize
While it would be a significant twist to display Malice, simply because of how different she is from the traditional Fantastic Four character, it is something thatMarvel Studios should embrace at some point. There’s no immediate rush for this to happen, but the possibilities are endless with this character, and Malice hasn’t been shown in a live-action format before. PreviousFantastic Fourmovies have stuck true to the classic Invisible Woman, and while that character is a lot of fun, seeing a different version would be unique. Additionally, it would allow Marvel fans to see the full range of her powers while introducing the MCU to another dominant female character, which is something the franchise needs at this point.
Sue Storm Being Malice Is Going To Create A Lot Of Storyline Ideas
This could Be A Great Addition To Avengers: Doomsday
One of the reasons why Marvel Studios should use the Malice alter ego is that it would open up numerous storyline ideas. In a similar manner to how unpredictable Scarlett Witch has been due to her darker edge and the intensity of her powers, the same could be done for Storm. Audiences wouldn’t know what to expect from her, and that would instantly make everything more surprising. It would provide Kirby with a wider range of opportunities to work as an actress, allowing for even stronger and more memorable performances, while also impacting thedynamics of the Fantastic Four themselves. The fact that there are numerous storyline opportunities, with Marvel even teasing her as a villain, suggests that this would be a no-brainer to explore. It doesn’t have to be rushed, as subtle teases to a big twist would likely make things more impactful, but it’s an opportunity that shouldn’t be wasted.
Avengers: Doomsdaycould be the perfect opportunity to showcase that version of the character, especially if the storyline is going to be heavily centered around her family. There are numerous signs indicating that her son will be atthe heart ofAvengers: Doomsday, with Doctor Doom potentially posing a real threat to Franklin, which in itself could bring out Malice. It would make sense for that version of the character to appear if that was the case, because it would be the case of a mother showing her desperation to do whatever it takes for her family. Considering the fact that fans have already seen her go through the journey of being pregnant to then being a mother, showcasing the protective side of her would make sense. Audiences would be able to understand the anger, frustration, and desperation of a mother wanting to do whatever it takes for her family, which would help the storytelling process. There were subtle teases withinThe Fantastic Four: First Stepsthat she’s a character capable of more, and Marvel Studios should allow Kirby to play in that sandbox.
