Summary

Although it’s impossible to be 100% accurate with Middle Ages history, Warhorse Studios wantsKingdom Come: Deliverance 2to be as authentic to history as possible. That’s whyKingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s storyfollows real historical events and why activities like alchemy see players take things step-by-step. Indeed, all of this helps players immerse themselves in the game and, by extension, the history of it.

Of course, a lot of immersion in RPGs relies on how the game world reacts to players.Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, like the first game, offers that in spades. The game will react to players who are walking around in disgusting clothes or without any pants, while crouching or doing odd things will draw eyes too. That sort of game immersion is also met with historical immersion at times, thanks to the little details that help bring the game to life. “I think KCD is all about the small details,” Warhorse Studios PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling told Game Rant during an interview in Kutna Hora, The Czech Republic. Sometimes those little details can slip by players, however.

KCD2’s Night Sky Comes Directly From 1403

As an example of how far the studio goes for historical authenticity, Stolz-Zwilling told me that Warhorse even checked the night sky for the year 1403. It’s only “somewhat accurate” of course, but the studio checked the night sky for that year and found the star constellation that would be present during the game’s events. Of course, very few players will look at the night skybox inKingdom Come: Deliverance 2and wonder how historically accurate it is, but it speaks to the team’s thoroughness if they are attempting to even get minor, likely unnoticed details right.

We even went so far as to check the night sky in the year 1403, what it could have probably looked like, and tried to find a star constellation in that area of that time, early Summer. Even that one is somewhat accurate. It’s not important for the players, per se, but the ones who actually realize that will be extremely happy about it.

Of course, there are times when some historical reconstruction and educated guesses are required. For example, a town hall in Kuttenberg burned down sometime after the game’s historical events, but Warhorse Studios wanted to include it. However, the only known detail about it is that it included an astronomical clock. Reconstructing it in the game required the studio to look at other astronomical clocks in The Czech Republic (and in some cases, wider Europe if needed), and take an educated guess with the help of the city,Warhorse’s historian, and various other institutions in the country.

The end result is something unique.Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2aims to be a great, immersive action RPGin its own right, while also providing a great immersive feeling for history buffs. The two are not exclusive, meaning someone can enjoy both. In fact, most players might do so without ever realizing it, such as when looking at the night sky.
