Spoilers ahead for Deadpool and Wolverine.
Summary
IfMarvel’s Wolverineis anything likeMarvel’s Spider-Man, then it’s bound to have plenty of additional suits for players to earn and wear. Many of theunlockable suits in theSpider-Mangamesare based on outfits from the comics, but Insomniac Games has also taken inspiration from the MCU. Several outfits likeSpider-Man: Homecoming’s homemade outfit,Avengers: Infinity War’s Iron Spider suit, andNo Way Home’s Integrated suit have made their way intoMarvel’s Spider-Manand its sequel.
WithDeadpool and Wolverinecontinuing to be a runaway success, it’s becoming more and more likely that content based on that movie will appear inMarvel’s Wolverine. Hugh Jackman’s iconic blue and yellow suit is a fan favorite and the most likely option for inclusion in the game. However, Insomniac has the opportunity to reference one of the movie’s best cameos and make plenty of players laugh.
Bringing the Cavillrine to PS5
There were manycameos inDeadpool and Wolverine, including several Wolverine variants from across the multiverse. Age of Apocalypse Wolverine, comic accurate height Wolverine,The Incredible Hulk#340 Wolverine, and Patch all appear as Deadpool hops from dimension to dimension searching for his titular partner. Most were fun references to the X-Men comics, but one variant in particular caught audiences off guard and made for one of the funniest moments in the movie: a Wolverine played by none other than Henry Cavill.
Including Henry Cavill’s Wolverine — or “Cavillrine” as Deadpool calls him — in the game to any degree would make for a great gag inMarvel’s Wolverine. Insomniac Games have already included multiple references to jokes from the comics and other media in their games. TheSpider-Man pointing memewas featured as an animation that players could trigger if they came across the other Spider-Man while traversing New York inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, while the Bombastic Bag-Man suit was an unlockable outfit in the first game.
Given Insomniac’s approach to suits in theSpider-Manseries, it’s unlikely that an actual Cavillrine outfit would appear in-game. Even when Insomniac has included suits from the movies, the studio has never changed a character’s face model to mirror the appearance of the Spider-Man actors. Insomniac would also need to get the rights to the actor’s likeness, which could prove to be difficult — although with how muchHenry Cavill loves gaming, it’s possible that he’d approve of such an endeavor. Without Cavill’s face, however, this Wolverine’s attire would dwindle down to just a white tank top and jeans — a regular outfit of Logan’s that will most likely already appear in the game.
A much more likely option would be Cavillrine appearing through an Easter egg. This could come in many forms, but one animation would be the perfect way to pay homage to Cavill. Insomniac has already incorporated fun details into its animations in the past, like with theidle animations inSpider-Man: Miles Morales.
One can assume that Wolverine will be popping his claws out a plethora of times throughoutMarvel’s Wolverine. Insomniac will need multiple animations to prevent this action from feeling repetitive. One relatively simple animation that would give Wolverine some serious style points would be to include Henry Cavill’s iconic “arm reload” fromMission Impossible: Falloutas a way to extend Wolverine’s claws.
Cavill already does something very similar to this when popping out his claws inDeadpool and Wolverine, and he proves how natural of a fit it would be with this character. It could even be an idle animation outside of combat. The move is both subtle and cool enough that it wouldn’t detract from the gameplay experience ofMarvel’s Wolverinefor players who miss the reference, but it would certainly bring a smile to those who catch it.
