Summary
The future of Marvel video games seems bright with titles such asMarvel’s Wolverineon the way. The game is another third-person action game developed by Insomniac Games, the same team behind the now-beloved Marvel’s Spider-Man games, and is confirmed to be set in the same universe.
Considering how well Marvel’s Spider-Man games have brought iconic villains to life for New York’s web-slingers, fans wonder which villains James “Logan” Howlett will fight inMarvel’s Wolverine. From fellow mutants to cybernetic killers, the potential for villains in the new open-world game is vast.
10The Hulk
Wolverine’s History Started With A Famous Rivalry
There is no better way to celebrate the history of Logan than to haveMarvel’s Wolverinehomage when the character first appeared. InThe Incredible Hulk #181, Wolverine is introduced as an adversary hunting the Hulk for the crimes committed by another monster, thus leading to an iconicrivalry between the two heroes.
In the original teaser trailer forMarvel’s Wolverine, an Easter Egg referenced that particular comic. Perhaps gamers will experience a flashback to that meeting between Hulk and Wolverine or a villainous version of Hulk such as the Maestro will make a surprise appearance.
9Viper
Her Inclusion Could Expand The Insomniac Universe
The mutant known as Viper has had encounters with multiple Marvel heroes over the years, including Captain America. WithMarvel’s Wolverinetaking place in the same universe asMarvel’s Spider-Man, which teases the Avengers in the canon, Viper could be a way to showLogan and Captain America serving togetherin World War 2.
Viper is known for being an associate of Hydra, even donning the moniker of Madame Hydra in the past. Her inclusion inMarvel’s Wolverinecould not only expand on the Insomniac universe’s past but provide a different kind of boss fight for Wolverine seeing how she is a tactical leader with an affinity for toxins.
8Daken
Like Father, Like Unfortunate Son
IfMarvel’s Wolverinewanted to tackle Logan dealing with the consequences of his loner lifestyle, Daken would be the ideal choice. Daken is Logan’s long-lost sonwith the same signature mutant abilities, only he was raised by other people except for Logan himself, which has caused him to have hatred for his father among other reasons.
Even though it’s a common trope to have the hero fight someone who is their darker equal, Daken would make a better example of it. Daken would not only allowMarvel’s Wolverineto showcase Logan dealing with his mistakes but also how fortunate the world is that he turned out to be a good person.
7Gorgon
Terrifying Villain For Mutants And Humans Alike
SinceMarvel’s Wolverineseems to be embracing a darker and bloodier adventure, Gorgon could be portrayed best with an M-rating. With the ability to turn people to stone by looking at them, Gorgon is a mass-murdering genius who uses his intellect to not only form his cult of terrorists, but he has taken over The Hand and Hydra in the past.
Whether he is a side mission boss or one of the main threats, Gorgon will be a brutal fight for players. His stone-freezing ability could be a stressful game mechanic where Wolverine has to look away from his eyesight, or it’s game over. As a bonus, Gorgon’s cultists could be another faction of enemies to fight in the game.
6Sentinels
X-Men Staples For Iconic Battles
It’s almost impossible not to feature the deadly Sentinels in anyX-Mengame.Even other games starring Wolverinein the past featured Sentinels, but fans might love a modern take on the mutant-hunting robots due to advances in technology to portray them even better than before.
Even ifMarvel’s Wolverineonly features one Sentinel, Insomniac could borrow from games such asGod Of Warby having cinematic fights against a giant foe while still keeping the player engaged with strong gameplay. Also, the Sentinels could be a way for fans to get surprise appearances from famous X-Men characters such as Beast, Cyclops, or even Storm.
5Wendigo
Wolverine’s First Villain Deserves Respect
Like with Hulk, Wendigo is important to Logan’s history, thus earning the character a place inMarvel’s Wolverine. Wendigo was the creature that killed people in Canadian forests, incidentally framing the Hulk and becoming Wolverine’s first villain in the comics.
The Wendigo has seen various incarnations; from a curse transforming humans into monsters to an extraterrestrial being like inMarvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. Since Insomniac made many changes tothe many Spider-Man villains, there is a chance they will do the same withMarvel’s Wolverineand give characters like Wendigo new or familiar origins.
4Lady Deathstrike
She Is Technically The Prototype Wolverine
Lady Deathstrike is a cyborg with many similarities to him, such as her Adamantium claws and a healing factor created by her father before Weapon X ever accomplished it. Deathstrike’s obsession with destroying Logan could easily make her a recurring threat inMarvel’s Wolverine, with Logan having to deal with being punished for the sins of Weapon X.
Lady Deathstrike’s claws combined with her fighting capability make her in many ways deadlier than Wolverine due to her hatred for him. She’s faster than Logan, and similar abilities render her almost impossible to kill; an ideal combination for one or more boss fights inMarvel’s Wolverine.
3Omega Red
A Super Soldier Even Avengers Fear
In a way, Omega Red was created because of Logan as a result of Russian forces learning of the Weapon X program andMarvel’s Wolverinecould explore this by having Arkady Rossovich as a major threat. So much so, that Omega Red has battled all thepowerful members of the X-Menand even Spider-Man.
Rossovich was already a dangerous murderer with a tactical mind, but when given powerful strength, tentacles grafted onto his body, and healing that rivals Logan’s, he became one of Marvel’s most deadly villains. A character like Omega Red could result inMarvel’s Wolverinesurprising fans with another playable mutant or even Yuri Lowenthal returning as Spider-Man.
2Weapon X Program
Vital To The Origins Of Wolverine
Given how Logan’s entire history with the Adamantium coating his bones comes from Weapon X, their inclusion inMarvel’s Wolverineis warranted. Whether it is as the main focus or via flashback sequences, Wolverine’s dark past with the evils of Weapon X could make for the best character growth for Logan.
The team of mutants and mercenaries that Logan served with in Weapon X would be a series of boss fights themselves. It also could allow the game to fix the common misconception that William Stryker created Wolverine’s Adamantium state when there were two evil scientists: Abraham Cornelius and Truett Hudson.
1Sabretooth
The Ultimate Archnemesis For Logan
At this point, it is almost guaranteed that Sabretooth will either be inMarvel’s Wolverineor alluded to tease a sequel.Sabretooth is as much a rival to Wolverineas Green Goblin is to Spider-Man; he’s always there to torment Logan physically and emotionally, having a very long and complicated history.
Both of them served in the Weapon X program and at one point, they were good friends, but due to multiple memory lapses, their history is all sorts of convoluted. What is known is that Sabretooth takes great pleasure in seeing Logan suffer, which is the perfect dynamic for a villain inMarvel’s Wolverine.
