Even after the unfortunate Sony and Insomniac leak in December 2023, there’s plenty that players still don’t know aboutMarvel’s Wolverine. The considerable amount of information and detail leaked aboutWolverineis not representative of what the full game will eventually include, which also applies to the game’s costumes. A video making the rounds showing Logan maneuvering through an empty developer room trying on the game’s costumes shows that the game includes plenty of nods to iconic Wolverine storylines from the character’s rich history in comics and film, but that selection of outfits is likely just the tip of the iceberg. IfSpider-Manand its sequel are any indication, players can likely expect Wolverine to don different outfits fromDeadpool & Wolverine.
Beginning with 2018’sMarvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac’s superhero games have a track record of including iconic costumes calling back to the heroes' appearances in film.Spider-Man’s costumesinclude the suit worn by Andrew Garfield’s rendition of the character in 2012’sThe Amazing Spider-Man, as well as the homemade suit and Iron Spider suit from Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man appearances.Spider-Man: Miles MoralesandSpider-Man 2would continue this trend by including several suits fromInto the Spider-Verse, and there’s every reason to believe that Insomniac will want to capitalize on the success ofDeadpool & Wolverineby including a selection of outfits that appear in the film.
Wolverine’s Suit in Deadpool & Wolverine Marks a Major Milestone
Fans have hadHugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverineacross several films, cementing the actor’s place as the de facto face that comes to mind when imagining a live-action rendition of one of Marvel’s most iconic characters. Bringing Jackman back after his retirement from playing the character following the release ofLoganwas bound to be a cause for celebration, andDeadpool & Wolverinewent the extra mile by introducing Wolverine’s unmistakable blue and yellow suit onto the silver screen for the very first time.
The fan reaction to seeing that costume worn by Wolverine’s longtime actor brought forth a wide range of emotions, and its inclusion inMarvel’s Wolverineis all but a guarantee.
Wolverine has worn the blue and yellow suit across several games, dating back to his appearances inX-Menon the Sega Genesis, butDeadpool & Wolverinemarks the debut of the character donning the costume in a live-action setting. And whileMarvel’s Wolverinecostume selection is known to already include Insomniac’s rendition of the iconic blue and yellow outfit (similar to the signature Insomniac-designed suits for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales' Spider-Man), there’s room for different variations on the same theme. Along with Insomniac andDeadpool & Wolverine’s versions of the suit, players will hopefully see the original John Romita version or even Jim Lee’s early 90s redesign.
Deadpool & Wolverine is a Treasure Trove of Costumes for Marvel’s Wolverine to Adapt
The following contains spoilers forDeadpool & Wolverine(2024)
In addition to its debuting of the iconic blue and yellow costume,Deadpool & Wolverinehas several Easter eggscalling back to the character’s history across comics. One of the film’s sequences in particular is a veritable onslaught of Easter eggs and references to iconic comic covers featuring Wolverine, from Todd McFarlane’s work onThe Incredible Hulk#340 to Adam Kubert’s alternate timeline future Wolverine from the Age of Apocalypse storyline. It’s safe to assume that most, if not all, of these iconic variants of Wolverine will make an appearance inMarvel’s Wolverine, not as film tie-ins but as nods to the history of the character in comics.
Regardless of which costumesMarvel’s Wolverineultimately ends up including beyond what was leaked late last year, the character’s place in the zeitgeist is as prominent now as it was more than 30 years ago during the early 90s comic industry boom. The return of the blue and yellow suit was an important part ofWolverine and the X-Men’s dominance over comics in the late 80s and early 90s, and its debut in the MCU deserves to be represented in the character’s upcoming game.
