The popular 2011 sandbox gameMinecrafthas three distinct dimensions, each with its own map and biomes. The travel between these dimensions is made possible with the help of the inter-dimensional pathways called portals.

One such portal is called Nether which connects the Overworld to the hell-like dimension of the Nether. Below, we will explain the steps to make the Nether Portal inMinecraft.

How to Make a Nether Portal in Minecraft

You can build the Nether Portal in two different ways, depending on whether you have a Diamond Pickaxe or not.

First Method:

This method asks youto get Obsidian, which is needed to build the Nether Portal frame. Tomine Obsidian, you’ll need aDiamond Pickaxe, which is crafted from three Diamonds and two Sticks. Since diamonds are rare minerals, they might be hard to come by.

Obsidian forms when lava comes in contact with flowing water, so you can find it in places where water is near a lava source. Alternatively, you can make Obsidian by pouring water over lava. Either way, you need a Diamond Pickaxe or stronger to mine Obsidian blocks from the ground. A functional Nether Portal of 4×5 blocks needs a maximum of 14 Obsidian blocks, but 10 blocks can do the job as well.

First place 2 Obsidian blocks on the ground, then usetwo Cobblestone blockson each side to create a base of 4 blocks. Next, stack 3 Obsidian blocks on top of each Cobblestone block, and place a placeholder block on top of each column. Finally, add the last 2 Obsidian blocks between the top blocks to complete the frame. Remove the Cobblestone corner blocks, and your Obsidian frame is ready.

To activate the Nether Portal, you need to light it up using Flint and Steel. The central part of the Portal glows purple once it is activated.Make sure to take Flintand Steel with you so you can reactivate the Portal when you return.

Method 2:

If you don’t have the Diamond Pickaxe, you’re able to still make a Portal frame using buckets. First, dig a 2-block hole in the ground and fill it with lava. Now pour water over it and it will turn into Obsidian. Next, build a 4×5 wall just behind the hole.

Now throw lava on the wall and then pour water over it to turn the lava into Obsidian. It would be a great idea to build the Portal close to where you get lava and water to save time. Make at least 10 Obsidian blocks as we explained earlier. Once done, use Flint and Steel to light the Portal and travel to the Nether.
