Summary

Mortal Kombatwill return with one of the fans' favorite characters. However,Mortal Kombat 2will be presenting the character in a different light.

Mortal Kombatfans were disappointed when the film was released in 2021 without their fan-favorite character. But the beloved figure will be featured heavily in the sequel. However, fans might see him differently in the film because sources said he would be portrayed differently from what fans saw in the video game. He might be dressed differently and rock a fresh look or his personality might be in contrast to how he was first presented in the franchise. One Mortal Kombat star even said the character would be played in a “unique” way.

Johnny Cage, an action movie star and martial artist, was noticeably missing in the 2021Mortal Kombatreboot. He is one of the cherished and central characters along with Raiden and Liu Kang. However, the sequel will feature Cage with Karl Urban playing the character.Mortal Kombat2 will reportedly give Cage a new look. One of Urban’s co-stars also seemingly confirmed this and even said that his version of Johnny Cage would be “unique.“Mortal KombatstarLewis Tan, who plays Cole Youngin the 2021 live-action movie, spoke withScreen Rantat the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con and shared some key details about Urban’s character in the franchise. According to him, theBoysstar is a talented and experienced actor and will bring an “interesting” take on the belovedMortal Kombatcharacter. Tan said, “I think it’s really unique, it’s maybe different from what people are expecting, but I think he’s such [a] good actor. He’s been around for a long time, done a lot of great roles, and a lot of great franchises himself. So yeah, he’s no stranger to this type of thing, so he’s bringing something really special.” He added that he couldn’t talk too much about the movie, but they had a lot of fun while filming, and he liked Urban’s take on Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat 2wrapped up filming earlier this year and Urban shared a snap with his co-stars in January to mark their final day on set. The snap also showed a glimpse of the crew members having fun together. Urban thanked everyone involved in the caption and expressed excitement about the project while teasing fans that he couldn’t wait for them to watch the film. He wrote, “That’s a picture wrap for me & Johnny Cage inMortal Kombat 2! Massive thanks to our incredible crew, cast, and phenomenal stunt team. Hands down the most action-packed fun I’ve ever had on a film! Can’t wait for y’all to see it. Special thanks to everyone off-set who helped make this time here on the Gold Coast Australia such a pleasure.” He also sharedanother picturewhen they resumed filming in November after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The snap featured Urban and his co-stars Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Adeline Rudolph and CJ. Bloomfield.

It’s unclear how different Urban’s Johnny Cage version will be from the video game. TheMortal Kombatfranchise has undergone several reboots, and most characters have remained faithful to their personalities and aesthetics. However, changes are not surprising in live-action or animated adaptations. The 2021 reboot even raised eyebrows because it changed the story big time. For instance, it introduced Tan’s character, who wasn’t present in the franchise but excluded one ofMK’siconic characters, Johnny Cage. The addition of Cage elevated the excitement for the upcoming sequel. Aside from Urban, new faces are joining the sequel, includingTati Gabrielle as Jade, Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel and Bloomfield as Baraka. Despite the changes the 2021 movie made in the franchise, it was still a hit, so the upcoming sequel is a must-watch.
