Summary

When watchingMy Hero Academia,it’s clearthat there is a difference between the Todoroki and Bakugo families. On the outside, the Bakugo family seems chaotic and loud, whereas the Todoroki family seems more reserved and elusive. However, there area few parallels between these two families.

While Bakugo Katsuki may have had a skewed personality at the start of the series, he did have a good childhood and loving parents. This contrasts with Todoroki Shoto, who was born into an affluent family. Shoto was conceived with a purpose, whereas Katsuki was out of love. But what are the differences and parallels between these two families?

Katsuki Comes From a Marriage of Love

The Bakugo Family Found Love Naturally, While the Todoroki Family Marriage Was One of Convenience

One of the first differences between the Bakugo and Todoroki families is that Katsuki was born into a family that genuinely loves, and Shoto was conceived with a purpose. Mitsuki and Masaru fell in love at work. Mitsuki was smitten with Masaru, and she aggressively pursued him. After some time, the two married and had Katsuki.

This is starkly different from the Todoroki family. Whereas Katsuki is the only child in the Bakugo family, Shoto is the youngest of four children. TheTodoroki family had a Quirk Marriage; these are arranged marriages for the sole purpose of choosing a quirk to be inherited by future children. Todoroki Enji desired a child who could possess a fire and ice quirk. As a result, Enji strived to conceive a child with both of these Quirks. This resulted in four children:Touya, who had a fire Quirkand later awakened an ice Quirk; Fuyumi and Natsuo, with an ice Quirk; and finally, Shoto, with a fire and ice Quirk.

Overall, Katsuki was conceived by two partners who loved each other and continued to grow together. However, Shoto comes from a neglected family, where his father forces his ideals onto him. Shoto always knew he was conceived for the solepurpose of surpassing All Might; this also made the remaining Todoroki children feel neglected by their parents.

Shouto Has a Tragic and Abusive Past

Unlike Katsuki, Shoto’s Childhood Was Filled With Neglect & Abuse

Bakugo Katsuki grew up in a loving home with two parents who adored him, even though their family can sometimes be loud and explosive. As a result, Katuski could participate in average childhood experiences, such as playing with his friends, going to the convenience store to buy snacks and collectibles, and overall having the freedom he needed to experience a normal childhood.

Todoroki Shoto was not that lucky. After he was born into the family, it was clear that Enji had finally conceived the child he had been yearning for. This led him toneglect his three other childrenfor the sole purpose of training Shoto and helping him control his fire and ice quirk. Unfortunately, Shoto was often forced not to engage with his older siblings. Due to this, he grew resentful of his father and yearned to be normal like his other siblings. Due toShoto having to be isolatedfrom his siblings, this is likely how he obtained his aloof and standoffish personality. This is likely due to Shoto not socializing with other children when he was younger; as a result, his awkward personality shines in social situations.

This contrasts with Katsuki, who often led his ragtag group of friends in elementary and middle school. Katsuki was always at the forefront of any event, wanting to be the best and show off whenever possible. However, when Katsuki entered high school, he toned down his show-off personality. While he may not have had a little group of goons in the Hero High School, he still knew how to socialize. However, he actively chooses not to, as seen in many situations where he retreats to his room or dismisses social events.

Overall, Katsuki was given the means to enter society with a good childhood and ambitions for the future. However, Shoto was often told to follow his father’s steps in surpassing All Might and being the number one Hero. While ultimately, this is what Shoto strives to do from his own goals, at first, it was merely to spite his father.

The Differences Between the Two Families

Fundamentally, These Two Families Are Polar Opposites

Another difference between the two families is the dynamics within the family. The Bakugo family is loud and explosive; however, it’s clear that Katuski’s parents love and care for his well-being. However, the Todoroki family is more reserved and keeps to themselves. This could be due toEndeavor’s career as a Hero, and likely, the family tends to keep to themselves for the sake of privacy from reporters. Additionally, the Todoroki family lives in a traditional Japanese-style home, whereas the Bakugo live in a modern home.

In the Bakugo home, Mitsuki likely serves as the family head, due to her explosive personality, much like Katsuki. Her husband, Masaru, is much more reserved and often keeps to himself, tending to calm down his wife and son when they argue. Compared to the Todoroki family, Enji serves as the head of the family, making all the decisions for the children and his wife. As Rei, Shoto’s mother, marred Enji for her family’s sake, she took on the role of a submissive wife, complying with Enji’s wishes for a child with a fire and ice quirk. However,Enji has shown remorseand plans to atone for his sins towards his family.

I take full responsibility. I swore to bear that burden… and live my life atoning for it all.

What makes these two families so different is that Katsuki could have been everything Enji wanted in a son. Katsuki has a fierce determination to become the number one hero and surpass All Might. To do that, he will continue to train his Quirk to be the best there ever was. Katsuki’s mother, Mitsuki, has a Glycerin Quirk, and his father, Masaru, has an Acid Sweat Quirk. As a result, the combination of these Quirks resulted in the perfect Quirk for Katsuki: Explosion from nitroglycerin.

Ideally, Enji would have wanted this: a child quickly conceived with a combination of the two quirks. However, Shoto was Enji’s fourth child, and at this point, his patience to gain the number one spot was quickly running out. Overall, while the Bakugo family can be seen as chaotic, loud, and explosive, they love and care for one another. However, the Todoroki family, who on the outside seems to be at the height of society, is filled with neglectful and abusive parents.

My Hero Academia
