Summary

When it comes to a world as massive and storied asStar Wars, it’s important that any adaptations not only lean into its decades of history and lore but also make every effort to connect players to both the what and the who they’ve become well-acquainted with in the films. While it’s always a delight to see new themes and characters introduced in aStar Warsadaptation, like Cal Kestis inStar Wars Jedi: Survivorand its predecessor, there remains a gentle longing for the familiar in fans for a symbol or fan-favorite character to arrive on the scene. This is a pool thatStar Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderandStar Wars Jedi: Survivorhave certainly dipped their toes into, but they have both missed one key opportunity that the next game perhaps shouldn’t.

Respawn Entertainment’sStar Wars Jediseries has now seen a handful of cameos from recognizable characters, like Darth Vader andBoba Fett. Each of these cameos has been brief, but it is enough to remind players that Cal Kestis is just a small part of the much bigger world ofStar Warsthat they have come to know beyond the games. However, there is still one more character who arguably deserves to grace the stage of theStar Wars Jediseries, and the next game could allow that to happen. At the same time, it could be a divisive maneuver, so Respawn would need to tread lightly.

The Next Star Wars Jedi Game Should Include an Obi-Wan Appearance

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Missed a Golden Opportunity for an Obi-Wan Cameo

By now, it has become somewhat common knowledge thatStar Wars Jedi: Survivoris set around the same time as theObi-Wan KenobiDisney Plus series. This alone presented the game with a golden opportunity to feature Obi-Wan in some capacity, but it ultimately passed on it. A missable conversation with Eno Cordova fairly early on inJedi: Survivor’s story also opened the door for an Obi-Wan cameo that it didn’t walk through. In the conversation, Eno mentions that he andQui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan’s late master, “enjoyed a close friendship.” Considering the history shared between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and the reference made to Qui-Gon inJedi: Survivor, the door is still open for the next game in the series to let Obi-Wan walk right on through.

An Obi-Wan Kenobi Cameo in the next Star Wars Jedi Game Could Be Divisive

While the idea of an Obi-Wan Kenobi cameo in the nextStar Wars Jedigame certainly sounds great, it could be a divisive appearance if some things aren’t considered. Firstly, although Alec Guinness was the original actor to play Obi-Wan in aStar Warsfilm, Ewan McGregor has since become the face and the voice most commonly associated with the character. It goes without saying then that ifStar Wars Jediwere to show a version of Obi-Wan not modeled after a young Ewan McGregor, it likely wouldn’t be received well by fans. Cameos likeDarth Vaderand Boba Fett haven’t had to deal with a problem like this due to their characters wearing masks, so only the likeness of their voices needed to be considered.

Speaking of voices, Obi-Wan didn’t make a physical appearance inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but his voice did. Shortly after Cere reveals to Cal that she was trained by Eno Cordova, Cal opens a Holocron that plays a short message from Obi-Wan Kenobi. While it wasn’tEwan McGregorwho did the talking, the talent’s voice resembled Ewan’s, and it was convincing enough. A physical appearance, on the other hand, wouldn’t be as forgiving. That being said, should Respawn devise a way to do it well, an Obi-Wan Kenobi appearance in the nextStar Wars Jedigame could be worth all the risks that inevitably come with it.
