Outside of looting, raiding, and fighting eldritch horrors,Once Humanalso offers some more relaxing activities to do. Such activities include ranching, which lets players care for a number of animals within the safety of their heavily-fortified bases.
The mid-August update for the game introduced ranching as well as arevamped fishing system inOnce Human. It’s a big win for players who enjoy these life-sim style mechanics, and if you want to make your own post-apocalyptic animal ranch, here’s what you need to do.
How To Capture Animals In Once Human
You can capture animals by knocking them out while they’re low on health. Before you can do this, you need to unlock the Animal Capture and Animal Taming nodes in the Logistics tab of the Memetics menu. Both are Tier 4 memetic nodes — givenhow seasons work inOnce Human, you won’t be able to unlock them until your server reaches its second phase. Unlocking them also costs 7 Ciphers and 2000 Energy Links each.
Once you get Animal Taming, you’ll be able to make the Tranquilizing Throwing Needles you need to knock animals out. To craft one, interact with an Intermediate orAdvanced Supplies Workbenchwith the following materials in your inventory or base storage:
After making your needles, put them in your hotbar as you would a grenade or other throwable item. Next, find an animal that you want to tame, hit it until its health goes below the notch on its HP bar, then throw a needle at it. Interact with the knocked-out animal to put it in your inventory.
Do be careful not to miss, as you’ll lose your needle if you do. There’s plenty ofRubber,Engineering Plastic, andStardust Sourcein the world, but gathering them in bulk can be a very tiring process.
How To Tame Animals
Go back toyour base inOnce Humanand make an animal pen by placing fences over a foundation piece. Make sure there are no gaps between fences, so the animal doesn’t wander away.
Next, place the animal inside the pen by going to the Tools tab of your inventory and interacting with the knocked-out animal from there. You’ll be able to place it on the ground as you would a vehicle. Then, build an Animal Trough using the following materials:
Feeding and Improving Tameness
The type of food you put in your troughs will depend on what animal you’ve captured. Interact with the animal to see more detailed information about it, including its diet and Tameness meters. Ideally, you’ll want to keep your animal’s Tameness above 20%. If it dips below that, it’ll attempt to escape. However, if you keep it happy, then it’ll provide you with resources like meat and hide.
Animals will only start producing materials once they reach 50% Tameness. If they reach 100% Tameness, they’ll produce significantly more resources. If the animal in question is a predator like a wolf or bear, they will fight for you once they reach 80% Tameness.
