The sheer number of possibilities for the powers that Devil Fruits can gift to their consumers makes theOne Piecepower system one of the best in the entire anime industry, mainly because of how diverse the range of abilities is. However, one ofthe Devil Fruit categories, namely Logia Types, has gone from being the strongest fruits in the series to ones that may no longer hold that standing, so let’s see why this is.

Logia Devil Fruits are those that give their user the ability to completely manipulate, create, and become any natural element, such as fire, ice, smoke, magma, etc. Because of this ability, the users of these fruits were nigh-invincible during the first part ofOne Piecesince the complete power system hadn’t been fleshed out at that point andHaki wasn’t really a thing back then. The intangibility granted to them by turning into an element to phase through most attacks meant that they could only have been beaten under very specific circumstances.
Examples of such circumstances were shown in Luffy’s fights against Crocodile and Enel. With the former, Luffy coated his attacks with water and blood to make Crocodile’s sand more solid, whereas, with Enel, Luffy was naturally resistant to lightning due to rubber’s natural insulation properties. Although Haki has technically always been a part of theOne Piecestory since the beginning, it wasn’t until much later on that it was completed as a vital part of the power system.By coating their attacks in Haki, characters were now able to bypass the intangibility of Logia fruits.
However, another aspect of the series has made Logia fruits less potent than they once were, and this is the fleshing out of the other types of Devil Fruits. Now, especially after Wano, Mythical Zoans are typically seen as the apex of power that can be achieved by eating a Devil Fruit due to the legendary transformations they give as well as the wide array of abilities that come out of these transformations. Moreover, Paramecias are often some of the strongest in the entire series, such as Whitebeard’s or Trafalgar Law’s overpowered Devil Fruits.

As the final saga ofOne Pieceinches closer and closer every day, fans are excited to see how the abilities of the characters will work in the final war for the One Piece treasure. Currently, with the Straw Hats finally on Elbaf, there have been some incredibly powerful Mythical Zoan and Paramecia type Devil Fruits that have earned their place as end-of-series powers to have, such as the Nika Fruit orWhitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi.
While Logia powers are certainly no pushovers and are still extremely dangerous, none of them hold the same overpowering strength as the previously mentioned fruits, except perhaps for Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi, which has a special ability to negate the abilities of all other Devil Fruits, making it a perfect weapon for the final saga.

One such way that Logia fruits can be brought back up to a similar level of strength is through their Devil Fruit Awakening. The strongest state any Devil Fruit user can reach is through undergoing an Awakening, which is what the most powerful fruits in the series have already done. However, there has not been a confirmed case of a Logia awakening, although fans suspect this is what happened duringAokiji and Akainu’s fight on Punk Hazard, which destroyed the entire island.
The details of Logia Awakenings are unknown, although fans have guessed likely explanations of how they could work. Since Zoan Awakenings greatly increase speed and strength, and perhaps even give another transformation, and Paramecia Awakenings allow the user to use their abilities onto things other than themselves, Logia Awakenings can have a bit of both of these abilities.
For example, in a Logia Awakening, not only would the potency of the user’s elemental abilities increase drastically, but they would outright influence their surroundings, turning them into the natural landscape in accordance with their Devil Fruit power. For example.Crocodile’s Awakening could allow him to create a desertwhere he controls every grain of sand or, similarly, Aokiji’s could create an icy tundra and control every part of that too. Through such a substantial power-up, Logia fruits can be made just as strong as the others again.
