Summary
Dexter: Resurrectionhas brought the iconic serial killer back to people’s television screens, and there’s been a whole host of familiar faces who have come with him. Dexter Morgan has been joined by a handful of original characters, which have helped to capture the attention of lapsed fans and those who loved the initial series.
However, there isn’t room for everyone to make a return inDexter: Resurrectionfrom the original show, much to the disappointment of fans. It’s also not just the audience who is let down, as one of the original cast members has shared their feelings about not reprising their role.
Dexter: Resurrectionkick-started with a dream sequence while Dexter was in a coma, which led to him being visited by several familiar faces.
Fans were given a glimpse ofDexter’s wife, Rita Morgan, with a clip from her death scene used in the sequence. However, it wasn’t Julie Benz who was used as a stand-in played the part for the bathtub scene, and she expressed disappointment about not returning for the spinoff show when speaking toBingetownTV.
“Am I a little heartbroken about it? Sure. But again, it’s not my show [laughs]. As an actor, I just tell everybody — I just don’t have the best of luck with reboots, I guess. It’s not in my karma, or whatever.”
While Dexter has moved on with his life within the storyline, that doesn’t mean that a return for Rita is impossible. The show has a history of bringing back deceased characters, whether in dream sequences or flashbacks, and Benz made it clear that she thinks there is an opportunity for her to return. “They just don’t feel that it’s important enough, which is sad. I think there is some storytelling that could be there.”Given that Harrison Morgan is currently in a difficult position after his actionsin episode one ofDexter: Resurrection, there is an obvious way for Rita to be implemented into the storyline. However, it appears that isn’t going to be the case if Benz’s comments are to be believed heading into the remainder of the season.
Dexter: Resurrectionhas yet to be greenlit for a second season, but the writers have revealed that the idea is for it to run for at least three. That means there will be many more opportunities for future cameos to take place if the show continues, meaning the opportunity for Rita to return is still available.Benz is open to reprising the roleshe played for four seasons, as the character helped shape Dexter into the man he became, bringing out a more emotional side in him. She is also the mother to Harrison, and given his role in the spinoff series, Rita’s presence is felt whether she physically appears or not.
Dexter: Resurrectionhasn’t shied away from surprise returnsso far, withthe likes of Harry Morgan, Angel Batista, James Doakes, Joey Quinn, Vince Masuka, and The Trinity Killer all making appearances. While some were only involved in brief cameos, others have returned as recurring roles, giving fans of the original show a true connection and link beyond just having Dexter Morgan as the lead character. However, up until now, Rita hasn’t been one of them, even if her character would fit inDexter: Resurrection.
