ThehorrormovieOrphanstunned audiences with a major twistwhen it was released in 2009, and there is going to be another installment in the franchise.Varietyreported thatOrphan 3is in the works.
Norman Golightly, the Dark Castle Entertainment CO-CEO, said:
“Dark Castle is excited to announce another terrifying chapter in the ‘Orphan’ saga. With the past success of the first two movies and another thrilling storyline, we are confident that ‘Orphan 3’ will be a must-see movie for both current fans of the franchise, and new fans alike.”
Dark Castle Entertainment and Lionsgate are developingOrphan 3, which will bedirected by William Brent Bell and written by David Coggeshall. AfterOrphanwas released in 2009, the prequelOrphan: First Killcame out in 2022. The prequel has a rating of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is higher than the original which has 60%. Although the reviews forOrphan: First Killweren’t all positive, it grossed over $37 million at the global box office, according toBox Office Mojo. Since the budget was $8 million, this was a success. Consideringthe popularity of theOrphanfranchise, it’s no surprise that there will be anOrphan 3.
The originalOrphanmovie captivated horror fans, and there was even a2023 documentary series calledThe Curious Case of Natalia Gracethat appeared to tell a real-life story of the film’s premise. InOrphan,John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate Coleman (Vera Farmiga) adopt Esther, who they realize is actually an evil 33-year-old woman. In the prequelOrphan: First Kill, Esther/Leena terrorizes the Albright family, and they learn who she really is.
It’s unclear whatOrphan 3would be about, but the filmmakers will have to rework the timeline slightly or, otherwise, make sure there is a logical explanation. While Esther/Leena is still alive at the end ofthe prequelOrphan: First Kill, time passes and she ends up with the Colemans inOrphan. Since she dies at the end of the 2009 film, it wouldn’t make sense for the story in the third movie to take place after those events. Perhaps there could be a compromise andOrphan 3could take place between the first and second movies. If that was the case, then audiences would easily believe that Esther/Leena had found another family to ruin.
No matter whatOrphan 3is about, horror fans will be glad to see Fuhrman playing her famous character again. The actress toldVarietythat she enjoyed that the prequelOrphan: First Killhad a big surprise. She said:
“I loved the twist because this is something that everybody expects when they see a sequel or a prequel, for it to rehash exactly what you knew about the last one.. And all of a sudden, it just flips everything on its head.”
