Summary

APokemonfan has shared their rendition of what Miliotic could have looked like if it had premiered inPokemon Red and Blue. ThePokemonGen 1 version has been skillfully created to strongly resemble the way Pokemon sprites looked when the series was just getting started.

WhilePokemon Scarlet and Violethad graphical issues, the series as a whole has seen its visuals evolve as the years have come and gone. First becoming more colorful and detailed sprites, the series now primarily uses modern modeling techniques, giving a three-dimensional look at every Pokemon in existence. While these graphical upgrades help the world to seem more real, there are still some who miss the original graphics and think back on the early games fondly.

Pokemonfan metalflygon08 has shared their rendition of Milotic as aGen 1 Pokemon. The artist has shared several versions of the sprites in black and white and a number of colors. One sprite shows Milotic from behind, as a trainer would see it when using one in a battle. The other view is from the front and emulates how a Milotic would look if encountered in the wild or when facing another trainer. The pixel art isn’t a perfect representation of Milotic, but that’s part of the point.

Gen 1 Pokemon Sprites are Notorious For Odd Qualities

Gen 1 sprites are notorious for not being on-model to how a Pokemon looked in any other format. WhilePokemon Red and Greenwere worse about this, the versions most fans in the west came to know still have squashy sprites that do the best they can to represent the Pokemon in a dynamic way with the limited space available. Metalflygon08 has done a great job recreating these qualities, with the front view of Milotic primarily in profile view, appearing far less elegant and slinky than its modern counterpart, and its tail fins look more like a weird hand. Even so, one fan said that the sprite wasn’t as “cursed” as the actual Gen 1 sprites.

This isn’t the first time that metalflygon08 has demonstrated what a later-gen Pokemon could look like in a Gen 1 game. Metalflygon08 recently shared their reimaginings of Teddiursa and Magmortar in the same style, which also received praise from the fan community. In this particular case, though, it’s not hard to imagine Milotic having been an actual Gen 1 Pokemon. Its evolutionary tree follows a similar path as Magikarp, as it goes from an ugly and weakFeebas to a beautiful and elegant Milotic, not unlike Magikarp being weak and useless but ultimately evolving into the powerful Gyarados.
