Summary

Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare fast approaching the second anniversary since their release, and The Pokemon Company has done a great job supporting the Gen 9 games so far with post-launch content and several smaller updates.Pokemongames' model is more similar to live-service titles by the day with this approach, as there are quite often limited-time events going on for players to get bonus items and mons via gift codes orPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s 7-star Tera Raid bossesto defeat and catch. Tera Raids lend themselves nicely to feature unique critters like exclusive Paradox Pokemon or even the returning shiny Gimmighoul event for the 2024 World Championships - however, this event is far from great.

Tera Raids are a logical progression for Gen 9 after Dynamax and Gigantamax Raids debuted inPokemon Sword and Shield, and it’s plausible that some form of raid will also be present in the next generation. Early in Gen 9’s lifespan, The Pokemon Company gave fans the chance to get a rare shiny Gimmighoul with a Tera Raid event, which was highly anticipated due to Gimmighoul being shiny-locked in the base game. However,Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s original shiny Gimmighoul event and the current one for the 2024 World Championships share a rather disappointing trait.

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Dropped The Ball With Their Worlds 2024 Gimmighoul Event

This Gimmighoul event launched on June 07, 2025, and will run up until August 22 alongside a few otherevents forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, like mass outbreaksfor increased shiny odds for Wattrel, Riolu, and Comfey. Unlike the mass outbreaks, the Gimmighoul event once again is only tied to Tera Raids, specifically 5-star Raids, and the critter has unfortunately the base odds of being shiny - namely, 1 in 4096. This is quite disappointing, considering this is the second iteration of the event and the only way to obtain this specific Pokemon as shiny.

Gimmighoul’s Tera Raid event includes the Pokemon as a boss in 1-star, 2-star, 3-star, 4-star, and 5-star raids, but its shiny form is only available as a rare chance in 5-star raids.

Given thatPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s support may downscale throughout 2025 and the start of 2026, assuming that’s when Gen 10 will make its debut, it would only make sense to give fans a higher chance ofobtaining shiny Gimmighoulfor the 2024 World Championships. Not only that, but this event can be extremely unrewarding and time-consuming because Gimmighoul’s shiny form is almost impossible to tell from the original, especially in a Tera Raid setting.

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Gimmighoul Tera Raid Event is Unrewarding

As such, having enhanced odds of getting the coveted critter as shiny would have been a better way to celebrate how far the game’s competitive side has come over the years, even more so with Gholdengo being a prominent pick in Gen 9 double battles. Instead, players are stuck with an event that runs for two weeks and is in no way guaranteed to make shiny Gimmighoul appear. On top of that, forcing players to quite literallycatch all Pokemon inScarlet and Violet’s raid in order to make sure they don’t run away from a shiny can be rather discouraging from a storage perspective.

Pokemon found in Tera Raids, be they regular ones or event ones, don’t have their shiny odds boosted by the Shiny Charm or Sandwiches.

With limited room inPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s storage boxes, catching hundreds of Gimmighoul after a 5-minute raid each can be extremely taxing and not really entertaining. This may serve as a teaching moment for the game to add a better shiny Gimmighoul event in the future, but for the time being, players may have to stick with it or skip it entirely. Neither is a great solution, and it doesn’t bode well for future events considering this is the second time the event goes live in a way that doesn’t really reward players for their time.
