Summary

Final Fantasy 16, the latest mainline installment in Square Enix’s flagship JRPG series, was easily one of the biggest games of 2023. Following the release of 2016’sFinal Fantasy 15, fans had waited more than 7 years for a new, numbered entry in the franchise. While this gap between the two games was more than most people would’ve wanted, for many gamers, the wait was ultimately worth it.Final Fantasy 16launched in June 2023 and was met with widespread critical acclaim and immediate sales success, as the game sold over 3 million copies in just a single week. Though some longtimeFinal Fantasyfans did have their gripes about the action-oriented direction of the title, the reception towardsFF16was, for the most part, very positive.

Sadly, not everyone had the opportunity to experienceFinal Fantasy 16for themselves because it launched solely on PlayStation 5. Though the title was meant to be exclusive to the console for only six months, according to the fine print in trailers for the game, more than a year has passed sinceFF16’s launch, and it’s still nowhere to be found on other platforms. Fortunately, Square Enix has confirmed thata PC port ofFinal Fantasy 16is in development, but it’s still unclear when exactly this acclaimed action RPG will make the jump to the platform. Based on hints from the developers, however, fans could get an idea of some suitable release windows for the upcoming PC port.

Final Fantasy 16 Could Make the Jump to PC Later This Year

In March 2024,Final Fantasy 16producer Yoshi-P revealed in an interview with the now-defunct outlet Game Informer that the PC version of the game was in the final stages of optimization. Additionally, he explained that the required specifications to run the port would be quite high. While he didn’t elaborate any further on this matter, Yoshi-P did provide a broad release window forFinal Fantasy 16’s PC port, stating that the game’s launch on the platformwas less than a year away. A recent leak seemingly supports this statement of his, as agame-ready driver profile forFF16appeared in an Nvidia driver update. Judging from this information, it seems like the game could make its way to PC before the end of 2024, potentially in the fall or early winter.

A Release Date for the Final Fantasy 16 PC Port Could Be Revealed Soon

Assuming that it is coming out this year, Square Enix could formally unveil the release date forFinal Fantasy 16’s PC port at some upcoming 2024 events. For instance, the studio could drop a trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the next big showcase of the year. This event is planned to take place in Cologne, Germany on August 20, and since PC gaming is big in Europe, it would make sense for Square Enix to provide an update on the port here. If not Gamescom, though, it may happen during the Tokyo Game Show, which will be held in Chiba, Japan from September 26 to 29. Square Enix has already confirmed that it will be attending both TGS and Gamescom, so it’s likely that fans will get some updates ontheFinal Fantasyfranchiseat these two events, whether they’re related toFF16’s PC port or not.

Final Fantasy 16 May Come to Other Consoles After the Release of the PC Port

After it eventually launches on PC, there’s a good chance thatFinal Fantasy 16could make its way to other consoles, like the Xbox Series X/S and maybe even the Switch 2. This will likely happen at some point, given that Square Enix recently committed to a more multiplatform approach after it announced that titles likeFF7 RebirthandFF16failed to meet its sales expectations despite initial commercial success. IfFinal Fantasy 16does indeed come to more platforms, it would likely be of great benefit to both Square Enix and theFFfranchise as a whole.
