Summary

The expansion of theDexteruniverse is in full swing with production underway on the prequel series,Dexter: Original Sin, which is set to air in December 2024. In addition to this,Dexter: Resurrectionwill catch up with the titular serial killer after the shocking events ofDexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall will provide the narration of ‘the inner voice of Dexter’ in the prequel, as well as returning to play Dexter in the sequel series. This has fans speculating on whether the two shows will be intrinsically linked in some way.

Of course, both shows are linked in the sense that they exist within the same universe, butMichael C. Hall’s narration inOriginal Sin, could somehow be connected to the presentDextertimeline inResurrection. The sequel series will start filming in January 2025, for a release date sometime next summer, just a few months after the debut season of the prequel ends its run on Paramount and Showtime. Michael C. Hall will be an executive producer on bothDextershows.

It hasn’t been revealed what form ‘the inner voice of Dexter’ will take inDexter: Original Sin,but it will probably take on a different form to the real-time reaction to events thatMichael C. Hall’s Dexter voiceoverprovided in the originalDexterseries. He was very much ‘in the moment’ when discussing his inner thoughts with the audience inDexter, and this was also the case inDexter: New Blood.

Dexter: Original Sincould see Dexter’s narration serve as a more reflective way of telling the story.Patrick Gibson is now playing a younger version of Dexter, so the narration wouldn’t really work if it was told from the point of view of the twenty-something Dexter. If the prequel was to go down this route, it would make more sense for Patrick Gibson to provide the voiceover instead of Michael C. Hall.

Michael C. Hall provided some hints as to what to expect from his narration inDexter: Original Sinduringthe panel at San Diego Comic Con 2024:

It was always a tricky thing to imagine where Dexter might have been coming from, who he’s talking to. There were times I imagined he was in some sort of space where he was shown his life and had to justify it to some overlord or something. And I suppose it kind of works the same way in this.

Despite the differences, it appears Dexter’s voiceover will still act as a justification for his actions inDexter: Original Sin. However, this time, it could be Dexter from the current timeline, looking back on his life, and trying to make sense of it. It’s possible the voiceover will take place from his perspective as he lays critically injured but very muchstill alive at the start ofDexter: Resurrection.Original Sincould start at the beginning ofResurrection, and then flashback to 1991, with Dexter continuing to recount his early days in Miami Metro Homicide, linking the two series together.

The biggest tool for an actor is to know as much as possible about their characters' backstory, and in a lot of cases, an actor doesn’t know every minutia of their subjects' past life. However,Michael C. Hall is heading intothe upcomingDextersequelwith an extra chink of armor that could potentially add layers of complexity to his performance as Dexter Morgan.

In arecent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael C. Hall spoke about his preparation forDexter: Resurrectionand how the new prequel series and his close involvement with it could inform his future performances in the sequel series:

As an actor, seeing real footage of things that I’ve tried to imagine for myself when I imagine what Dexter’s early days were like. Now I’m going to have this technicolor version of his memories to refer to. I think it’ll help inform my experience of whatever comes next in the other series, which I can only speak vaguely about at this point.

This interview hints that there might be some significant linkage betweenOriginal SinandResurrection, and the fact that Michael C. Hall is heavily involved in both shows increases the chances of that. Even if there aren’t any direct links between them, the prequel series will provide the fans with an extra layer of context to the events taking place inDexter: Resurrection.
