Mario & Luigi: Brothershipgives you many open islands to explore at your own pace and oftentimes in the order you want to explore them. There are also many side quests that will be unlocked, along with collectibles to further incentivize players to go back and explore previous islands instead of rushing through the main story. While the game isn’t a massive open world, you’ll still have a large degree of freedom in what content you wish to engage in and when with the first choice coming fairly quickly into the game.

After completing the first main island, Willma will ask for your help in saving both of her kids, Billdit and Maykit who went to separate places. Before making your choice, there will be a notification indicating this choice has more weight than you may think; here’s how your choice affects the game.

Should You Save Billdit Or Maykit First In Mario & Luigi: Brothership?

Your personal goal for saving the kids is that one of them can buildHammers for Mario and Luigi, that can be used both in combat and to break things in the open world. While the game indicates there may be story changes based on your decision, it doesn’t go beyond the small section between saving the siblings, as you immediately go and save the other one after saving the first.

The story-related content that is different is who crafts the brothers the hammers, and in total it’s only a few minute’s worth of content. After a few cutscenes on Shipshape Island, you’ll head to whichever island you haven’t gone to, and after that, the story will be the same no matter what choice you originally made. No matter what order you save the siblings, their individual stores will open at the same time.

The hammers also come out exactly the same no matter which sibling makes them.

How Does Level Scaling Work In Mario & Luigi: Brothership

While there is no story reason to pick one sibling over the other, you may wonder which island has the right level enemies to tackle first. No matter which island you pick first, that island will have enemies that start at level three, and the next island will have enemies at level five. One island isn’t more difficult than the other and they are roughly the same length, so enemy strength shouldn’t be a concern, especially whengetting Lucky hitsmakes any fight easier.

Thanks tothe fast travel system, you can also return to either island with your hammers after getting them, as they can be used to break rocks and open up previously blocked-off paths.
