Horizon Zero Dawnmay be an open-world game, but it’s still primarily a linear experience. However, this doesn’t mean it’s without choices. There are a few moments where players must make decisions, such asdetermining Olin’s fateor deciding how to respond to the bullies in the early portions of the game.
Another choice comes much later in the game that can slightly alter the ending: deciding whether or not to fight Nil. While this choice doesn’t have a significant impact, it’s still one that players may want to consider carefully.

Who is Nil in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered?
Nil is an intriguing character inHorizon Zero Dawnwhom players will encounter near bandit camps. A former Carja soldier, Nil kills bandits not out of a sense of justice, but purely for the thrill. Since eliminating bandits has no repercussions from the game’s major tribes, they make easy targets for him.
Fight Nil or Walk Away in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Once all the bandit camps are liberated, Nil will ask Aloy for a duel. This is one choice to consider carefully, as it has a small impact on the game’s final two missions.
If you choose to fight Nil, Aloy will kill him, and you won’t encounter him again. If you decline, Nil will bedisappointed but will leave peacefully. Later, during themain mission “The Looming Shadow,” Nil reappears, fighting alongside Aloy against Eclipse soldiers.
Choosing to spare Nil is advantageous, as it gives you one more ally in the game’s final act. However, whether you kill or spare him has no effect on the ultimate ending ofHorizon Zero Dawn.
Which Choice Is Canon in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered?
While this choice isn’t the most impactful, walking away is considered the canon option. Although the game doesn’t confirm this directly, Nil does reappear inHorizon Forbidden West, suggesting that sparing him aligns with Aloy’s intended journey. So, if you’re invested in staying true to her story, it’s best to let him live.
