In itsQ2 results for fiscal year 2024, Sony revealed that over 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been shipped globally to date. This is in line withsales of the PlayStation 4, which had sold 67.7 million consoles at the same point in its lifecycle. Additionally, the report noted that 3.8 million PS5 consoles were sold in Q2 itself, which represents 1.1 million fewer units when compared to the same quarter during the previous fiscal year. However, the company reported that game sales have increased, with 77.7 million PlayStation 5 games sold during Q2. 5.3 million of these were first-party titles.

Sony Has Sold 65.5 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles to Date

On November 7, Sony released the PlayStation 5 Pro, which features an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling to support higher fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates. Along with many PS5 titles being enhanced for the new console, the system will also supportPS5 Pro Game Boost, which will improve the performance and graphics of over 8,500 backward compatible titles from the previous generation. Recent rumors imply that the PlayStation 6 will be released in 2028, though no word on the company’s next console has officially been announced.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is part of the ninth console generation and debuted with a launch lineup that included Demon’s Souls and Astro’s Playroom. The console comes with a Blu-ray disc, although a digital-only edition is also available for a cheaper price.
