Summary

Excitement is building forSpider-Man 4following Tom Holland’s confirmation that thefilm will begin shooting in mid-2025. The film will be released in betweenAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret War, which gives it the chance to help close out the Multiverse Saga in a significant way.

Spider-Man 4will be Holland’s fourth solo superhero film, picking up with the web-slinger after the pivotal events ofSpider-Man: No Way Home. The movie is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, replacing the MCU’s original Spider-Man trilogy director, Jon Watts who moved on to directStar Wars: Skeleton Crew. Cretton’s history with the MCU is a strength going intoSpider-Man 4, with the director having broughtShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and theupcomingWonder Manseriesto life for Marvel Studios.Spider-Man: No Way Homehelped usher the multiverse into the MCU in 2021, so it makes sense thatSpider-Man 4could continue to capitalize on the concept.

Will Spider-Man 4 Be A Multiverse Story?

Plot details forSpider-Man 4are under wraps at the moment, although there are many indications it will continue to revolve around the Marvel multiverse. While this is disappointing to those who were hoping for more ofa street-level Spider-Man experience, the trajectory of Peter Parker’s story in the MCU so far has made him an efficient character from which to explore the corners of the multiverse. Rumors indicate thatSpider-Man 4’sscript was overhauled to become more of a multiverse story, which makes sense given that the film will take place in between twoAvengersfilms that will likely have huge ramifications on the multiverse.

There’s also the fact thatSpider-Man: No Way Homewas so integral to the multiverse saga. It helped to set up some of the plot aspects ofDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand was the first MCU movie to introduce the idea of using actors from past films to play variants, in the form of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men.Spider-Man: No Way Homeintroduced someground rules to Marvel’s multiverseand blended concepts introduced inLoki, with those inDoctor Strange. What’s more important, however, is thatSpider-Man: No Way Homefound a way to make its multiverse impactful by tying its concepts to important character arcs, andSpider-Man 4could find a way to do the same.

Spider-Man Could Send Peter Parker Into the Multiverse

The ending ofSpider-Man: No Way Homeleft Peter Parker with nothing. The character learned the hard way that meddling with magic had multiversal consequences, resulting in every character from the multiverse who knew Peter Parker’s identity converging on Earth 616. To prohibit this from happening, Peter makes the ultimate sacrifice by askingDoctor Strange to erase himselffrom everyone’s minds and memories, including that of his girlfriend MJ, best friend Ned, and the Avengers. The movie ended on a significant note for Peter, who had been trying too long to have it all by being both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, forcing him to live with the result of his choice and embrace a new life where nobody knows his name.

The ramifications of this are something that has to be explored inSpider-Man 4. With Peter having lost everyone thanks to the rules of the multiverse, this might inspire him to try and get everybody back by using the multiverse to his advantage. Peter’s journey into other multiverses to reconnect with his loved ones would be an impactful way of tying the multiverse to Peter’s character arc. Perhaps he could even visit the universe of one of his fellow Spider-Men to seek advice, which would support therumors that Garfield may returnin the fourthSpider-Man film.

Could the Multiverse Become the Spider-Verse?

This exploration of the multiverse could also be theMCU’s way of doing a Spider-Verse story. Perhaps, with Peter having lost his friends and family in his universe, he could find a new family in his fellow Spider-brothers in the Spider-Verse. Of course, there would be a catch to Peter’s actions and his meddling with other universes would no doubt cause incursions across the multiverse that don’t go unnoticed. This means Loki or the TVA could end up getting involved in his story.

Spider-Man 4 Needs to Support Avengers 5 & 6

Whatever the plot ofSpider-Man 4ends up being it will need to work harmoniously with whatever happen is to happen in thenext two Avengers films. The film’s release date is sandwiched between the major superhero movies, meaning it can’t branch out too wildly and do anything that would break the canon of what Marvel Studios has planned inAvengers: Secret Wars. If Spider-Man ends up visiting other multiverses in his fourth film these experiences may give the character an edge or an important learning that could be an asset in the Avengers’ coming battle with Doctor Doom, which would make his exploration of the multiverse a worthwhile action.

Spider-Man 4will be released on July 31, 2025.
