The portrait ofStar Wars’ future is becoming clearer as it was recently announced that a new movie trilogy is in the works. There are several otherStar Warsendeavors confirmed in the meantime, such as theMandalorian & Grogumovie,Andor: A Star Wars Storyseason two, andStar Wars Jedi’s final chapter, but aside from Respawn’sJediswan song it is unclear what the future ofStar Warsgames looks like.Star Wars Eclipseappears to be a handful of years away at bestandStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s remake has gone radio silent, soStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s sequel is the only tangible game to look forward to.

Star Wars’ upcoming theatrical trilogy, or at least an upcoming movie, is supposedly featuring Rey. If so, Rey will likely wield a lightsaber again and potentially lead a new generation of Jedi.Star Wars’ last trilogy of movies was fairly underwhelming, especially when compared to its predecessors or other recentStar Warsmedia, and therefore it’ll have a lot of respect to earn back somehow. It’ll hopefully succeed in doing so, though, because a new trilogy could giveStar Warsa deep well of stories to tell and fill a gap that’ll be left in games followingStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s sequel.

Star Wars Needs a Fresh Trilogy of Ideas for Its Games

Besides its prominence inStar Wars Battlefront 2, including its single-player campaign,Star Wars’ sequel trilogy hasn’t laid many frameworks for associable games. Indeed, theStar Wars Jediseries,Star Wars Outlaws,Star Wars Eclipse, andStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicall essentially dodging that present-day era seems to suggest that it’s to be avoided at all costs, at least explicitly.

Star Wars Outlawsdoes feature sequel trilogy planets such as Cantonica and Kijimi, to be fair, and therefore it’s great that some of its iconography has made its way to other corners of the galaxy far, far away. Likewise, it’s highly unlikely thatStar Wars Jedi: Survivorwould’ve had a crossguard lightsaber stanceif it wasn’t for how iconic Kylo Ren’s hilt is, andLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagafeatured the sequel trilogy as a licensed adaptation of all nine movies. Either way, not having a newStar Warsgame wedged between the seventh, eighth, and ninth movies in the Skywalker Saga seems like a missed opportunity that a trilogy of movies 10, 11, and 12 hopefully won’t overlook.

Plus, it’s possible that theStar Wars Jedifranchise has monopolized a quota of Jedi-related games, and it could open that blast door to a wealth of stories and game adaptations in the future when it eventually concludes.

Star Wars Trilogies are a Shorthand for Narrative Experiences and Events

Part of what makes theStar Wars Jedifranchise orStar Wars Outlawsso intriguing is the fact that players don’t need to parse what the state of the galaxy is if they’re familiar with the lore and context of different eras or trilogies.Star Wars Jedi’s series taking place betweenRevenge of the SithandA New Hopedeclares that Jedi are refugees and the Galactic Empire is an omnipotent threat, for instance, whileStar Wars Outlawstaking place betweenThe Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedideclares that criminal syndicates are running rampant and the rebellion effort is nearing its zenith.

It’s currently unknown what may occur duringStar Wars’ upcoming trilogy, but havingStar Wars’ next Soulslike game be an adaptation of a story led by Rey could be a phenomenal way to honor her as a protagonist. Indeed, the Soulslike subgenre has treatedStar Warsexceedingly well. Whatever shapeStar Wars’ Jedi tales take in the future, there will hopefully be more whereStar Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderandStar Wars Jedi: Survivorcame from, even if Cal Kestis, BD-1, and the Stinger Mantis crew are shelved.
