Black Magic usershave been a constant threat to the magical world, and the main antagonists in most ofFairy Tail’sarcs. But little is known about the origins of these scoundrels and their motivations, aside from what they manifestduring their endless monologues.
This list contains a ranking of the most powerful Dark Magicians in Fairy Tail, alongside a power scale to measure their strength, an outline of their abilities and powers. Most importantly, readers will learn if these Dark Magicians continue to be a threat to Natsu and his friends, or have been permanently defeated.
6Midnight
A Psychotic Dark Wizard, Capable Of Reflecting Magic
The strongest member of the Dark Magic Guild Oracion Seis, Midnight (also known as Macbeth), is capable of releasing powerful reflection magic. Thiscorrupted version of Light Magicis twisted to create a vacuum and crush its components. As a member of one of the strongest Dark Magic guilds, Macbeth has used his strongest spells, Dark Rondo and Génesis Zero, to oppress his rivals several times throughout the series.
During his first encounter with Natsu and the crew, Midnight managed to nearly kill Erza Scarlet, crushing her with his reflection magic. He also went toe to toe with the Fire Dragon Slayer himself. After the defeat and disbandment of Oracion Seis, he comes back for another round and calls himself Brain II, though he is ultimately defeated again by the Fairy Tail Guild members. Currently, he has somewhat reformed, but no one knows when his twisted personality will cause him to fall to the dark side again.
5Brain/Zero
Both Of His Split Personalities Are Evil
This villain is the original leader and founding member of Oracion Seis, the guild of Dark Magicians who wanted uncover the power of Nirvana and destroy half a continent. Inside this evil but serious mage hides a more vicious and malignant personality that calls itself “Zero.” Brain’s power is considerable, but as Zero, he is capable of more than simple destruction.
As the master of Macbeth (Midnight), he has access to the same repertoire of spells, including Dark Rondo, Dark Capriccio, and Genesis Zero. However, Brain’s spells are improved and more powerful versions, capable of hurting foes in cruel and unusual ways. As Zero, he gains superhuman strength, movement, and casting speed, making him more dangerous than he already is. He is currently a member of Oracion Sechs, a mysterious group of Dark Wizards gathered by Faris to destroy both mages and dragons and create a new world order.
4Keyes
The Most Powerful Necromancer In Earth Land
Keyes, the Necromancer, is one of the most powerful and vicious Dark Mages in Earth Land, and an elite member of the Nine Demon Gates of the Tartaros guild. He is a master of an insidious and powerful revival magic, able to resurrect mages and bind them to his will. Through it,he was even able to bring back Silver Fullbusterand dominate him to do his bidding.
His ultimate goal is to destroy the Magic Council, and bring forth the supremacy of Dark Mages over the rest of the “weaklings” of other magic Guilds. Keyes is also a master of Curse Magic, which he uses to make their foes writhe in pain while he protects himself with Dark Barrier magic, another of his signature spells.
3Hades
One Of The Most Powerful Black Magic Users
Master Hades, formerly known as Precht Gaebolg, is the founder and leader of the Dark Magic Guild, Grimoire Heart. He was Fary Tail’s former founding member and Guild Master, until he passed the batton to Makarov Dreyar and vanished from the public eye. Years later, he resurfaced as a powerful Dark Magician, wielding the corrupted version of Fairy Tail’s signature Fairy Law magic: Grimoire Law.
As a user of powerful arcane curses, Hades is capable of disrupting and torturing his opponents. He can even shoot bullets of compressed Dark Energy, which can penetrate his foes' defenses as if they were made of paper.He is also able to use Ancient Magic, Resurrection Magic, and even Re-Equipment Spatial Magic (with his ability being even superior to Erza Scarlet’s). His Right Eye is known as the Demonic Eye. Its power is unknown, but it seemed to help him control the Abyss of Magic, and even read through the Book of Zeref and learn its secrets.
2Faris
The Current Holder Of The Dark Wizard Title
The Dark Mage Faris is the heir of Zeref Dragneel, and has even absorbed the power of Acnologia andhis will to destroy the world. Faris' overall power can be compared to that of the late Zeref, though she is outmatched by her “master” in both wisdom and knowledge about Dark Magic. Nevertheless, the full extent of Faris’s power is yet unknown. The current serialization only shows her as the leader of a mysterious Dark Guild known as Oracion Sechs (which seems to have been created for similar purposes as Oracion Seis).
Faris has shown great defensive abilities, being able to withstand a punch from Ignia himself. She also possesses access to Acnologia’s Dark Dragon Slaying Magic, which has been gained through the implantation of the Dragon’s severed arm in her own body. This version of Faris seems to be the Earth Land original, since Natsu asked her if she was from Edolas. She corrected him by saying she is actually from the series' original world.
1Zeref Dragneel
The Most Powerful Black Magic User In History
The strongest and legendary Dark Magician, and the origin of all Dark Magic, Zeref Dragneel is a man cursed to live forever due to the curse which he carries and forces him to kill everything that surrounds him. Desperatelyseeking a way to cure this curse, Faris met Mavis Vermillion (ages ago) and through flashbacks, fans learned that they established some sort of romantic interest in each other.
But good things are never meant to last, and Zeref’s curse ended up killing Mavis. Mad with pain, Zeref disappeared in the shadows of history, until he finally resurfaced seeking END (Natsu’s true form). Zeref is able to wield Dark Magic like no other wizard, and the power of his spells have no comparison, putting him in a near-god state. He is not only a powerful and walking-endless source of Dark Magic power, but he is also wise, like few other magic users that have ever lived in Earth Land. He has gained some control over the Ankhseram Dark Curse over the passing of the years, which allows him to basically obliterate everything he wishes to.
