While the latest season ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas been met with a mixed reception, its newest team member appears uncannily similar to the protagonist of the short-lived cult classic PlayStation seriesGravity Rush. The debut of Zoe “Lawless” Lawton as a playable character inSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s third season has also introduced her own combat and traversal mechanics. However, some players have pointed out across social media that Lawless is the spitting image of Kat from the PlayStation-exclusiveGravity Rushgames.
Like other niche, stylized games such asHi-Fi RushandJet Set Radiothat gained cult followings, theGravity Rushseries was best known for its unique design and gameplay. But withGravity Rush’s future in gaming currently uncertain, it’s easy to compareSuicide SquadSeason 3’s Lawless gameplayand its gravity-based mechanics to those used by Kat. As a result, given how similar Lawless is to Kat and the likelihood of a threequel, series fans could find theGravity Rushexperience they’ve been longing for inSuicide Squad.
Though thenewestSuicide Squadseason has had a rocky start, its latest playable character has still garnered some positive attention from players online after it reminded them of the cult classic seriesGravity Rush. With multiple posts like the ones below scattered across social media, many players pointed out how similar Lawless’ traversal mechanics are toGravity Rush’s protagonist, Kat. Despite a few minor differences in how certain gravity-based mechanics are implemented inSuicide SquadandGravity Rush, there seems to be a significant overlap between the two characters.
The most obvious similarity between Lawless and Kat is that both shift gravity to travel across an open world. Yet the similarities run deeper, asSuicide Squad’s Lawless has a secondary Moon Gravity ability which weakens this gravitational pull, allowing players to use this airtime for improved aerial combat. In contrast, whileGravity Rush 2also introducesa Lunar gravity style to achieve the same effect, it goes further with a Jupiter style to increase Kat’s gravitational strength instead of weakening it.
Beyond this, howSuicide SquadandGravity Rushutilize these gravity-based mechanics for combat is where the games begin to differ. While Kat’s other appearances ingames likePlayStation All-Stars Battle Royalemight have given her more traditional fighting mechanics,Gravity Rush’scombat seems specifically focused on primarily using gravity to target enemy weak spots. However, as part of the shooter genre,Suicide Squadencourages players to use these gravity-based mechanics to enhance their combat, such as how abilities like Moon Gravity, Manipulated Singularity, and the new Feline Grace Infamy set all cater to airborne combat.
Despite players comparingSuicide Squad’s Lawless toGravity Rush’s Kat while expressing hopes that the latter might return in a third game, the future of the PlayStation-exclusive series remains uncertain. While there is promising news of a potentialGravity Rushfilm adaptation in the worksand series director Keiichiro Toyama showing interest in a third game, it doesn’t seem likely for the foreseeable future, after developing studio Team Gravity dissolved in 2020. Though it may not be a perfect alternative forGravity Rushfans, there are more than enough gameplay similarities between Kat and Lawless for it to be worth joiningSuicide Squadfor its Season of Lawless.
